Josie cut a glance at Kane. “Is she always like this?”

“It’s a valid question,” Kane said. “I suppose it depends. Is Captain Marvel available for the battle or is she off saving other galaxies?”

“She’s available.”

Josie rolled her eyes. “I can see why you two get along.”

“We don’t get along,” Kane and I replied in unison. We both seemed equally offended by the statement.

“The Corporation is very dangerous. We treat them like a school of sharks. We don’t do anything that would draw their attention to us,” Kane said.

“What would happen if you did draw their attention?” I asked, almost afraid to hear the answer.

“They don’t care about us,” Josie interrupted. “We’re small potatoes.”

“They do in the sense that they like to control everything in the supernatural world,” Kane countered. “They’d control humans, too, if they could manage it. I wonder what’s of interest to them in that house.”

“It may be that the djinn has taken it away by now,” I said. “It depends on what it is, which is why I want to go take another look if the coast is clear.”

Josie looked at me with alarm. “Did you hear what we just said? You can’t go back there.”

“I don’t blame her,” Kane said. “Fairhaven is our town. If The Corporation is using one of our local properties for some nefarious purpose, we should know about it.”

Josie pinned her boss with a fiery look. “And what if they are? What if they’re turning leprechauns into soap or defanging vampires? Are we really going to get involved?”

“Why would they turn leprechauns into soap?” I asked.

“It’s just an example of a nefarious purpose,” Josie shot back.

“I don’t think I needed any examples, but thanks for the visual.” I’d never look at a bar of Irish Spring the same again.

“At the very least, I’d like to know why here,” Kane said.

“We know why here,” Josie replied heatedly. “Because of the crossroads.”

“I don’t think it’s as simple as that,” Kane told her. He looked at me. “How heavily warded is the property?”

“I’m aware of two wards, but there might be more. I can get past them if the current occupant is no longer an obstacle.”

“The six-foot-six djinn with the neck tattoo,” Kane said.

“Yes.”

Kane tapped his fingers against a glass, thinking. “Did you identify yourself to him?”

Shit. I did. “I gave him my name, but I told him I was training to be a cop. It was a convincing performance.”

“You shouldn’t have done that. You don’t want to be on their radar,” Josie said.

“You’ve made your point.” There was nothing I could do now. Josie had the benefit of hindsight; I did my best in the moment without all the information. Even now, we didn’t have all the information, which was the reason I was determined to go back.

“Is there any chance The Corporation is responsible for Diamond’s death?” I asked. Given their presence and the timing of his murder, the possibility seemed worth considering.

“It’s doubtful,” Kane replied. “I’m not aware that he has any connection to them.”

“He would’ve had to disclose it if he did,” Josie said, “under the bylaws.”

“And the manner of death and disposal doesn’t sound like The Corporation’s style,” Kane added.
