“You’re charming,” I said. “Haven’t you been able to wheedle the truth out of him?”

Gunther smiled at the compliment. “Iamcharming, aren’t I? Truthfully, I haven’t tried. If a prince of hell wants to keep his secrets, I say we let him.” He set the empty glass on the counter. “You, little lass, are another story.”

“What if I told you I were a princess of hell? Would I get to keep my secrets too?”

He grunted. “If that’s true, then you two are a match made in… Well, not heaven.”

My jaw tensed. “We’re not a match.”

“Are you sure about that? I haven’t seen him this enamored—ever.”

“He isn’t enamored. He’s curious.”

“One of the reasons I’m so fond of him.” Gun booped my nose. “Fear not, o’ anxious one. I won’t be searching your underwear drawer for clues.”

“Because I don’t hide any secrets there?”

“Because you don’t own any decent underwear. Not worth the gander.”

“What makes you think I don’t own decent underwear if you haven’t seen it?”

Gun waved a hand in front of me. “You judge a book by its cover which, by the way, is as it should be. That’s what covers are for, to advise you as to what lies between them. Your favorite material is denim, and your T-shirts look old enough to drive. These are not the hallmarks of someone with worthy underwear.”

Fair enough. “I like to be comfortable.”

He smiled. “And it suits you.”

“Somehow I don’t think that’s a compliment.”

He jabbed a thumb over his shoulder. “Would you like me to extract Cillian from your living room on my way out? No charge.”

“I’d be grateful.”

“And I’d be grateful if you added a smidge more lemon to the iced tea next time. It was missing that little twist of sour.”

“Next time I’ll frown at it first.”

Mock laughter rang through the house as he made his exit. “You’re so funny, Clay. You should take your show on the road.”

If Charles Diamond had gotten his way, I would have.

CHAPTER13

My fist banged on the top of the computer. Okay, technically,Ibanged on the top of the computer; I only wanted to avoid accountability for the act and blame my fist as though it had a mind of its own.

“What’s with the rage against the machine? Looks like it’s working to me,” Ray said.

I swiveled in the chair to glare at him. “This is why I don’t want you in the house uninvited.”

“Because I’ll see how little you know about technology?”

“I’ve already confessed to be a Luddite. Because you’ll see me at my worst.”

Ray chuckled. “If this is your worst, I think you’re worried about nothing. What are you so desperate to extract from the Internet?”

I told him about The Corporation’s secret vault in the basement of the house on Thoreau Street and my fears associated with it. “But there’s no information about The Corporation online. It’s like the organization doesn’t exist.”

“And who told you about it in the first place?”
