“Kane.”

Ray snorted. “Figures a prince of hell would know. Why don’t you invite him over to talk more about it?”

“Because he doesn’t know about the vault, and I’m not sure I want him to.”

“You don’t trust him, even after he brought you home and tucked you into bed like a true gentleman?” Ray made a guttural sound. “Heck, I’d trust him after that.”

Kane had carried me into my bedroom and watched over me after I’d fallen unconscious during my search for Ashley Pratt.

“Maybe he was trying to lull me into a false sense of security. That’s how they get you.”

He scratched his head. “How who gets what?”

“Never mind.” I pushed back my chair in frustration. “Bruce is dead. Solomon’s dead. Monty and Jason are dead, and there’s a cavern of gold in another realm in the basement. I need a solution—fast.”

“Wait. Who are Monty and Jason?”

“Long story.” I glanced at my phone beside the computer.

“Call him,” Ray urged. “It’s important to learn to ask for help when you need it.”

“I don’t need it.”

“You’re as stubborn as they come. Anybody ever tell you that?”

“My grandfather.” And then Pops would laugh and say I’d inherited that particular trait from him.

“Walk me through your thought process.” Ray glided closer to me. “What’s the worst that can happen if Kane helps you? If this organization is as dangerous as everybody says, then it seems to me you need to band together to protect yourselves against a greater threat. And from what you said, Kane would agree.”

“He paid for the pyxis,” I blurted.

“What’s a pyxis?”

“A container for supernatural potions and powders, in a nutshell. The one I got to break the wards was very pricey. Kane paid for it beforehand without telling me.”

“And you think he expects something in return, like one of those fellas that pays for dinner on the first date?”

I smiled at the older gentleman. “Something like that but insert more evil.”

“I know where he’s from, but I gotta say, Mr. Sullivan doesn’t strike me as very evil.”

Ray had a point. I picked up the phone. “I’m supposed to be Iron Man.”

“Iron Man joined the Avengers.”

I cast a sidelong glance at him. “Josie said the same thing.”

“She a demon, too?”

“Vampire.”

“Well, she knows her Marvel.”

I set aside my reservations and sent Kane a text. His reply was immediate, which made me feel both relieved and anxious at the same time. I seemed to feel conflicted about Kane no matter what the situation.

He arrived within thirty minutes, looking dressed for an executive board meeting.

“Do you own a pair of jeans?” I asked, admitting him inside.
