Sighing, he leaned against the back of the chair. “You don’t have to tell me, that’s fine. There ought to be some secrets between us, I suppose.”

I was relieved to win the next round so I could ask one of my burning questions. “Why did you pay for the pyxis?”

He tapped a tile on the table. “Because I knew you wouldn’t be able to afford it.”

“I can’t pay you back.”

“I didn’t expect you to.”

“Then why do it?”

He arched an eyebrow. “It’s for the greater good, is it not?”

And there was the answer I’d been hoping to hear. Thank the gods.

Kane placed his final tile on the board. Game over.

“Congratulations, Mr. Sullivan. You’re the new Fairhaven Scrabble champion.”

He extended a hand to shake mine, but I picked up my glass and drank instead.

“Right,” he said. “When would you like to schedule a rematch?”

“After I’ve finished dealing with the Thoreau house.”

“I’ve been wanting to ask you about the status. Diamond’s death has been an unwelcome distraction.”

I paused. “I found something in the basement there.”

“A body?”

“A goldmine.”

His eyebrows crept up. “I see.”

“They seem to have broken through to another realm in the basement and created a treasure trove.”

“In other words, they use it as an offshore account that’s easily accessible from this one.”

I nodded.

Kane contemplated the revelation for a moment and said, “That’s one of the ways they hide their wealth.”

“From whom?” Based on what I’d learned so far, I couldn’t see Uncle Sam going after The Corporation for unpaid taxes, not without dire consequences for the government.

“From anyone with an interest.”

My gaze drifted to his mouth, as it often did when I stopped paying attention to the words coming out of it. I quickly corrected course when he noticed me.

“Something on my lip, Miss Clay?” He dabbed at the corner of his mouth with a napkin.

“Not anymore. You took care of it.”

He didn’t bother to hide his satisfied smile. “How much gold would you say is there?”

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

He blew out a gentle breath. “This is very bad. Did you encounter anyone inside this time? Another guardian?”
