West looked at me curiously. I knew the demon and the werewolf weren’t fans of each other, but I wasn’t sure whether the reason was a species clash or a specific incident. As long as it didn’t impact me, I didn’t care to know the details.

West stopped short at the kitchen table. “Scrabble?”

“Are you any good, Davies?” Kane asked.

West pivoted to face me. “You’re playing Scrabble with him?”

“Would you prefer she be playing another game with me?” Kane asked smoothly. “Ihaveoffered.”

I directed my question to West. “Is that a problem?”

“No, it’s just… It’s Scrabble.”

“Yes, it is,” I said. “Can I offer you a drink? I have iced tea with minimal lemon.”

“No, thanks. I’m only here to talk about a rumor I heard.” He glanced at Kane. “Seeing you here makes me think the rumor is true.”

“And what rumor is that?” Kane began to tidy up the tiles.

“The Corporation,” West said simply.

“You know about them, too?” I asked. Was there any supernatural in Fairhaven that hadn’t heard of them? I was beginning to feel deprived.

“I’ve heard whispers about them,” West said. “The pack is in the dark, though, and I’d like to keep it that way. No sense getting them riled over nothing.” His gaze flicked to Kane. “It is nothing, right? I mean, why would an organization like that care about our little town?”

“Your little town with the crossroads that gives them an all-access pass to realms unknown?” I asked. “Gee, I can’t imagine.”

Kane didn’t look up from the table. “We shall see.”

“That’s not an encouraging answer,” West said.

Kane gestured to the board. “Sit down and play.” He shook the tiles in the bag. “I’ll even let you choose tiles first.”

“Board games aren’t really my thing.”

“An alpha brain like yours? Surely you can hold your own.” Kane smiled at me. “You don’t mind if he sits in for you, do you, Miss Clay?”

I gestured to the empty chair across from Kane. “Feel free. I’d love to witness this meeting of the minds.”

“How can you play games when The Corporation is a threat?”

“I’m an excellent multitasker,” Kane replied.

Reluctantly West sat. He seemed to know Kane well enough to realize he’d get no information about The Corporation without playing the demon’s game.

“You start,” Kane advised, once they’d selected their tiles.

West’s thick brows met in the middle as he examined his letters. As I pointed to a tile, about to offer my thoughts, Kane clucked his tongue.

“No help from the audience, I’m afraid. You’re not a team.”

“I don’t need help,” West growled. He put down his letters and Kane followed suit.

“Ten points,” Kane observed, typing the result on his phone. “I win that one.”

“Now, about The Corp…” West began.

“Ah-ah-ah,” Kane said. “First you must win the round. Then you may ask your question. That’s how it works.”
