Ray nodded proudly. “Didn’t take too much effort either.”

“Thank you, Ray. That’s amazing.” I shut the door behind us and left the nosy ghosts outside.

“Can I offer you anything to eat or drink, Dan? I have a green banana, multigrain bread, your choice of cheddar or Swiss cheese, or a Pink Lady apple.”

“You make it all seem so appetizing,” the demon said. “I do enjoy the sweetness of a Pink Lady.”

I arched an eyebrow. “We’re still talking about the apple, right?”

His eyes popped. “Ooh. Do you have any almond butter? I’ve lately discovered the joy of dipping my apple slices in almond butter. It’s as close as I’ll ever get to heaven.”

I clutched my chest. “Dan, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

I set to work scooping the almond butter into a ramekin. Dan gallantly offered to slice the apple, so I passed him the paring knife and a cutting board. He retrieved an apple from the bowl on the counter and began to cut with finesse.

“One for you as well?” he asked.

“Don’t mind if I do.”

Dan whistled while he worked. He had to be the most good-natured demon I’d ever encountered. “You don’t seem too concerned about the situation,” he said, moving on to slice the second apple.

“I’m concerned, but I’m confident we’ll come up with a solution that doesn’t end in the death and destruction of the entire town.” I hoped.

Dan dipped an apple slice in the almond butter and then slid the ramekin closer to me. I did the same.

“Where did Kane go?” I asked. I knew Kane wouldn’t tell me, but Dan seemed more agreeable.

“He didn’t say, nor did I ask.”

“Do you always do his bidding without question?”

Dan crunched on an apple slice. “If you’re trying to goad me into revealing more than I already have, it won’t work.”

“Because you’re his loyal subject?”

“Because I don’t know any more than I’ve told you.” His mouth twitched. “Although I must say, he seems quite taken with you.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Kane doesn’t trot out the Great Duke of Hell for just anybody.”

“Speaking of hell, why are you here and not there?” In fact, why did all the noble demons seem to have flocked to Fairhaven?

Dan looked me in the eye as he demolished another apple slice. “There’s no almond butter in hell.”

I nodded. “Seems like a legit reason to stay.”

“I don’t live here. I visit Kane on occasion. We’re old friends and I miss his company.”

“Why ishehere and not there?” I paused. “Or is he there now and that’s why you’re here?”

“Is this some sort of Abbott and Costello sketch?” Dan asked with amusement.

I pointed an apple wedge at him. “Careful. You’re showing your age.”

He smiled. “Oh, I’m much older than black and white television.”

I covered my chunk of apple in almond butter. “You sidestepped the question, Dandelion.”
