“Anything by Alicia Keys, but my favorite isGirl on Fire. That’s who I was named after. Mom said I was conceived while they were listening toNo One…”

I clamped my hands over my ears. “I don’t need the details,” I said. “I don’t have a favorite song.”

“Who doesn’t have a favorite song?” Alicia seemed genuinely baffled by my admission.

I was too distracted by the snarling and biting sounds behind me to think properly. If Kane got hurt because I refused to… Never mind. He was a grown demon and had made his decision to leap before he looked.

“It’s over,” Alicia said, pushing down my arm.

She was right; one creature was on the ground and the other one was standing. Luckily it was the correct one still upright. Judging by the angle of the Lamashtu’s neck, she was dead. I didn’t mourn the loss; the creature was a known killer of babies. It sickened me to have followers like her, but I didn’t get to choose them.

Monster Kane retracted his wings, claws and snout. The rest of the features followed until Kane Sullivan, elegant demonic entrepreneur, stood in the clearing again.

Dan staggered to his feet, rubbing his head. “You’re back.”

“And just in time, it seems,” Kane replied.

“I had everything under control,” Dan assured him.

Kane smirked. “Yes, I could see that. I’m sure a weaponless Miss Clay would’ve defended herself with no problem.”

“You tore that thingup,” Alicia said with great admiration.

Kane glanced at the dead demon. “I most certainly did.”

“You are fierce.” She sounded amazed, which I understood, because I felt that way too. I knew Kane was powerful, but I didn’t realize how ferocious he could be. I was both shocked and slightly turned on. I shoved aside the latter thought.

Kane adjusted his cufflinks. “I am quite fierce when the situation requires it. Now, young lady, can you please explain why this situation required it?”

“Why would you summon a demon that brings fever and death?” I demanded.

“Why would you summon a demon at all?” Dan chimed in. “We’re quite dangerous.”

Alicia audibly swallowed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t do it on purpose. The Internet wasn’t very descriptive.”

“What did you expect to happen?” I asked.

Her gaze dropped to the ground. “I read that I could sell my soul to the devil.”

Kane stepped over the dead demon to join us at the edge of the clearing. “That wasn’t a devil. You summoned Lamashtu, and she had no interest in your soul, only your flesh.”

Alicia grimaced. “Yeah, I kinda figured that out. I guess the Internet isn’t the best place for accurate information on demon summoning.”

“It certainly isn’t. In the future, should you have a question regarding the supernatural, I would urge you to ask Miss Clay, or come see me and I’ll sort you out.”

I gave him an exasperated look. “You want her to go to the Devil’s Playground for help? She’s a kid.”

“If it’s the difference between this and braving the patrons of my club, then yes. But I assume she’ll start with you.”

“Don’t encourage her,” I said.

“Too late for that, Miss Clay.”

I pivoted to face Alicia. “I told you no crossroads. Why would you do the exact thing I warned you not to do?”

She shrugged. “I’m a teenager. Rebellion is what we do.”

“Why would you want to sell your soul to the devil or anyone else?”
