“And that’s why you trust her?”

I nodded. “Absolutely. If Magnarella has a third nipple, Josie would lead with that. No cushion.”

“I can work without a cushion.”

I leaned back against the sofa. “Let’s have it.”

His grin was full of mischief. “Are you certain you’re up for it? I’d be happy to provide a pillow.”

“Dream on, Sullivan. I’m here for information. Nothing more.”

Kane licked his full lips, and I realized how intently I was staring at the swipe of his tongue. He seemed to notice, too, because his lips stretched into a smug smile. “Hungry, Miss Clay? I’m quite confident I can offer you something that would satisfy you.”

“I’m fine, thanks. I filled up on Nerds before I got here.”

He pulled a face. “More than one? I wouldn’t have thought they’re your type.” He stopped talking. “You’ve been sharing snacks with Camryn, I take it.”

“She thought my Halloween stash was lacking.”

“And was it?”

“I didn’t want to encourage the children. It’s a long walk to my front door, and they seemed tired.”

“You haven’t seen tired until you’ve been in my circle of hell. You should see the way we…” He cleared his throat. “Never mind.”

“Magnarella,” I prodded.

“Right. The vampire is a caricature of himself. He likes cigars and brandy.”

I blew a raspberry. “Typical. Next, you’re going to tell me his favorite dessert is a cannoli.”

“Close. Tiramisu.”

“He can have it.”

“Not a fan?”

“No. I think it’s boring. Might as well eat cottage cheese and call it a night.”

“Then what’s your idea of a favorite dessert?”

“Anything with chocolate for starters. Bonus points if it has peanut butter or caramel.”

“A real sweet tooth. Miss Clay, you do manage to surprise me.”

“What about you?”

“I don’t know if I should tell you. You’ll accuse me of being bland.”

“Vanilla pudding?”

“Close. Creme brûlée.”

“I’ll forgive you that one. It’s better than tiramisu.” My stomach growled, prompting a smile from Kane.

“Is all this talk of dessert giving you a craving?”

“The desire is always there. It’s just whether I act on it.”
