“Not to me.” He paused. “Something strange is happening.”

I feigned shock. “In Fairhaven? Never.”

“No need for sarcasm. I thought you’d want to know.”

“Why?”

West seemed taken aback by the question. “Because you live here now.”

“I live alone in the Castle.”

“The Ruins.”

“Castle,” I stressed, “with high walls, a gate, and a functional moat. Which part of that suggests I’m interested in outside events?”

He cast a quick glance at the moat. “It looks great, by the way. Whoever you used did a good job.”

“Thanks. I’m happy with it.”

West tugged his earlobe. “Are we done with the pleasantries now? I have information to share.”

I sighed. “If you must.”

“A few wolves slept through the night last night.”

“Congratulations. They’re big kids now.”

He pointed to the clear blue sky. “It was a full moon.”

It was. I’d seen it myself.

“Too much partying at Arrowhead Trailer Park? Too many beers can put me in a coma. I snore, too, apparently.”

His expression remained impassive.

“Are they awake now?” I asked.

He nodded. “But they said they’re tired. Said they didn’t sleep well, which makes no sense. They slept like the dead.”

An uneasy feeling gnawed at my stomach. “Have they been dragging themselves around today like sloths with brick feet?”

“More or less. One of them fell asleep in the kitchen, which wouldn’t have been the worst thing except he was in charge of making the oatmeal for everybody.” West shook his head ruefully. “I haven’t seen that much oatmeal on a body since before the chicken pox vaccine.”

“How old are you?”

“Older than I look.”

I digested his information. There was no way it was a coincidence. He was right; something strange was happening in Fairhaven. Again.

“Mind if I speak to the sleepyheads?”

West angled his head. “You know something?”

“Not exactly, but I don’t think this is an isolated incident.”

“That’s what my guts says too. Come on, I’ll drive you.”

We exited the cemetery and crossed the bridge. “You’re right about this place,” he said, as we passed through the iron gate. “It’s starting to look more presentable.”
