I leaned back and folded my arms. “Stop right there. We’re not playing this game.”

“I thought you liked Scrabble.”

“You know perfectly well I’m not talking about Scrabble.”

He allowed himself a tiny smile. “You two seem to be getting on famously. I thought there might be something to report.”

“The only thing to report is that his bachelor pad has enough expensive artwork to pass for a funky museum.”

His brow lifted. “You were in his home?”

“Only for a conversation.”

“Yes, of course. A conversation.”

“You’re lucky you didn’t put air quotes around that word, or I would’ve jumped across the table to throttle you.” I resumed looking at my tiles. “If you must know, I was there during a rather noisy Halloween party, and I needed to be heard.”

“I get the sense that need for you is constant.”

“Funny.” I put down my tiles. “Your turn.”

“You’re not going to tell me the word?”

“Why bother? You’re going to check it anyway.”

He made a show of keeping his hands on the table. “Despite my teasing tone, I do worry.”

“About what?”

“About your relationship.”

“There is no relationship. He owns a nightclub where a lot of supernaturals frequent. Sometimes I go there when I need information since he seems willing to share it with me.”

“Yes, curious, isn’t it?”

“What is?”

“That he’s willing to share it. Kane Sullivan is a prince of hell. He doesn’t need to share anything with anyone, yet he chooses to be generous with you, a complete stranger.”

“You’re generous with me.”

“I’m a vampire hermit. I like the company. Sullivan is a more social creature and can surround himself with whomever he desires.” He paused. “It seems to me he desires you.”

“You’re reading too much into it. He tolerates me. That’s all.”

“If you say so.”

“I didn’t move here to find Prince Charming. I moved here to be alone.”

Otto selected more tiles from the bag. “Yes, I can see you’re very committed to it.”

“I’m glaring at you, just so you know.”

“No need to tell me. I can sense it.”

“Either way, he’s a demon and a prince of hell. I’d be a fool to get involved.” And Pops didn’t raise me to be a fool.

“We should have dinner this week. I’ll have Heidi add it to my calendar.”
