“I’m glad you said ‘when’ and not ‘if.’”

“No promises,” I warned. “I’m just channeling my inner Officer Leo.”

Gun frowned. “Who?”

“The new cop. It means I’m being cheerful and optimistic.”

“Oh. Got it. I haven’t met him yet.”

“You should. He’s cute.”

Gun perked up. “Cute like a baby bunny or cute like we’d want to rut like rabbits?”

“He seems straight, and more like a Labrador than a bunny. Lots of energy and enthusiasm.”

Gunther groaned. “Gods, that sounds so appealing. Are you sure he’s straight?”

“Never say never.”

Amusement glinted in his eyes. “Did he hit on you?”

“I get the sense he doesn’t hit on anybody. He just radiates so much appeal that he can have anybody he wants.” I met his inquisitive gaze. “And before you ask, no. I don’t think he wants me. He was more interested in my house.”

“Your house does have a certain charm, like men in need of fixing.”

I drummed my fingers on the table. “The absence of dreams is important. I just don’t know how to interpret it.”

Gun rubbed his forehead. “The timing is terrible. I don’t need Cam in dire straits. I have enough to worry about with my sister.”

“On that note…”

He nodded. “Yes, tell me everything.”

“I passed to the next phase.”

He raised his hand for a high-five. “That’s great.” When I tapped his palm lightly, he added, “Isn’t it?”

I told him about the god fight.

“Oh. That sounds terrible. You don’t have to be naked in Jell-O, do you?”

“Doesn’t sound like it.”

“Thank the gods for small favors. Can Dusty and I be there to support you?”

“I have a feeling her presence will be required, in case I fail to fulfill the contract.”

“That makes sense.” He chewed his lip. “I’m sorry for getting you involved, Lorelei. I should’ve sucked it up and gone to Kane.”

“It’s one fight. I’ll duke it out with my divine opponent and be on my merry way.” I pushed back the chair and stood.

“You’re leaving?” Gun looked despondent at the prospect.

“I need to do some research for Cam. Can you stay with her?”

“Not all day. I have to work.”

“Can you get someone to take over when you leave? I don’t think she should be left alone.”
