Her nostrils flared. “I don’t want you to have any further contact with my daughter. If Alicia shows up on your doorstep again, send her home.”

“She’s lonely,” Ray’s voice cut in. I hadn’t noticed him enter. “Tell her Alicia is lonely.”

I glanced at the older ghost out of the corner of my eye. “She doesn’t want to hear it, not from me.”

“She’s hearing it from her father,” Ray said.

“Not when she can’t hear you.”

Renee leaned on her elbow. “This is not amusing.”

I made a face at Ray that said,See?

“Tell her she’s been working too hard. She looks ready to drop.”

“Are you serious? You want me to tell a middle-aged woman she looks tired? Why not just tell her to smile or calm down?”

“I tried that once,” Ray admitted. “It didn’t end well for me.”

Renee snorted. “He tried that once.”

“It didn’t end well for him,” I finished for her.

Her brown eyes widened a fraction. “That’s right.”

Ray practically danced a jig. “Tell her she stormed out of the house, took my car, and got pulled over by a cop for speeding.”

I told her.

Renee was unimpressed. “Alicia could’ve told you that story. Lord knows my child does not understand discretion.” She raised a finger. “Let the record show I did not get a ticket.”

I looked at Ray. “Is there anything you can tell me that Renee knows but Alicia wouldn’t?”

“I thought you didn’t want to get involved in family drama,” Ray said.

“It seems like I don’t have a choice since family drama has parked itself in my kitchen.”

Renee’s eyebrows lifted. “Excuse me?”

“I don’t like inserting myself into family dynamics. It’s uncomfortable.”

“Nobody asked you to befriend Alicia,” Renee snapped. “She’s a teenager. She should be spending time with kids her own age.”

“I totally agree.”

Renee yawned again. “I don’t know why I’m so tired. I track my sleep every night on my Apple watch, and it said I got a full eight hours.”

“There’s a sleeping bug going around,” I told her.

“Is that like a stomach bug?”

“Pretty much.” I couldn’t explain the supernatural element because I hadn’t yet figured it out myself.

“I thought of something,” Ray announced.

“Let’s hear it,” I said. I wanted this conversation to end, so I could get back to the Camryn crisis.

“I don’t think she would’ve told anybody this story. It was somewhat embarrassing for both of us.”
