“No, I’m in the mood for something with cinnamon or nutmeg today.”

“Don’t tell me you’re a pumpkin spice fan.”

He shot me a curious look. “What’s wrong with that?”

I bit back a smile. “Nothing. Throw on a pair of yoga pants and you’re a basic bitch.”

Rita motioned for us to step up and order. I opted for the salted caramel latte. I really wanted the mocha but couldn’t bring myself to follow Kane’s advice on principle.

“A large pumpkin spice latte for me, please,” he said.

More like pumpkin spite.

He handed over a twenty-dollar bill before I could even reach for my wallet.

“My treat,” he said.

“It seems you’re always covering my drinks tab.”

“I’m more than equipped to do so.”

We moved to the far end of the counter to wait for our drinks, and he pivoted to face me.

“What’s so important that you’ve left your fortress to mix with the population of Fairhaven?” he asked.

“You underestimate the amount of time I spend at home.”

“An evasive answer. Interesting.” He contemplated me. “You weren’t meeting anyone here or you wouldn’t have ordered with me.”

“Would it bother you if I were?”

“Of course not. What you do is your business, Miss Clay.”

“As it happens, I was looking for the new cop, Officer Leo.”

“I see. You two have hit it off, have you? Does Magnarella know about your change of heart?”

I rolled my eyes. “Not to date him. To question him about the sleep issue. I guess you’ve heard about Camryn.”

“The guild can talk of little else.” The demon frowned. “Why would you question the new recruit? I would think Chief Garcia would be a better source of information.”

I decided to share my update with him. It wasn’t the kind of information I needed to keep to myself.

“And Officer Leo told you about his anteater dream? Thatisinteresting.”

“Do you know anything about the baku?”

“Can’t say that I do, but if this creature is terrorizing the residents of Fairhaven, I’ll have to assert my dominance.”

“You’re a prince of hell,” I reminded him. “That’s your territory.”

“Except I’m not currently in hell. I’m here.”

“For reasons that remain unclear,” I added with a pointed look.

“It seems we both have histories we’d like to keep to ourselves,” he said.

Our drinks were placed on the counter, and we reached for them simultaneously.
