“One of these days, we’ll have to chat more about music, when there isn’t a creature to slay.” His fingers dropped to rest on his lap.

Part of me longed for him to keep playing, but I knew it would be a mistake. I told him about the baku and my need for a talisman.

“And you believe this would help wake Camryn?”

“And the others.”

He observed me. “Well done, Miss Clay.”

“Not so fast. I haven’t defeated it yet.”

“Maybe not, but you’ve given us more of a lead than anyone’s developed so far. A baku never would’ve occurred to me.”

“Can you find a talisman?” If anybody had the kind of connections necessary to locate a talisman at a moment’s notice, it was the prince of hell.

Kane regarded me. “The baku has already visited you. Another encounter could leave you in a coma.”

“I’m aware of that.”

Josie joined us at the piano. “Tell me where it is, and I’ll bring it for you.”

The vampire was as desperate to get rid of me as West. She had good instincts; I’d give her that. No wonder she was Kane’s head of security.

“Allow me to use the talisman. I’m a prince of hell. The baku doesn’t stand a chance.”

“As tempting as your offer is, I’m the one who needs to handle it.”

“Why you? You didn’t bring it here.” His gaze intensified. “Or did you? Not deliberately, of course. Did you accidentally summon it somehow?”

I couldn’t tell him the truth. “I think I might have.”

“You shouldn’t put yourself in harm’s way because of guilt, not when someone else is equally capable of doing the job.”

“This is my mess. I need to clean it up.” Now that I knew more about the baku, I felt convinced its arrival was no coincidence. The baku was here because of me.

Kane heaved a sigh in frustration. “If you won’t let me do it, then at least talk to West. It sounds like his wolves have been affected as well.”

“I thought you two hated each other.” As the alpha of the local Arrowhead werewolf pack, Weston Davies wasn’t a big fan of the prince of hell.

“I don’t hate anybody,” Kane said. “Hate is wasted energy.”

“He hates you,” Josie said, pressing down on a piano key. I got the sense she enjoyed telling her boss that someone disliked him.

“West will do what’s necessary for the safety of his pack,” Kane said, ignoring Josie.

“I don’t need West. I said I’d do it, and that’s final.”

Josie snorted. “It was nice knowing you, Clay. Just out of curiosity, who gets your house if you die?”

“Miss Clay doesn’t require a Last Will and Testament, Josephine. She’ll be fine.”

“My lawyer says everybody needs one.” She cocked her head at Kane. “Do you have one? Who gets the club if you die?”

Kane laughed shortly. “If I die? Listen to yourself.”

“What if you become incapacitated like Cam?”

“Dantalion will take my place, should that day ever come, which it won’t.”
