“Please, go in while I go get your food,” Mrs. Brown says, stopping in front of a door. I raise an eyebrow at her.

“This is the dining room; that’s the kitchen,” she points to the last door in the hallway.

“Oh, I’ll just grab my breakfast and bring it here,” I suggest.

“No, you don’t need to do that. As Jeffrey’s guest, it’s my responsibility to take care of you,” she says with a cute frown.

“Grabbing my food is nothing. Plus, it’s unreasonable for you to go through the stress when I can easily grab it and bring it here,” I tell her.

“Please, let’s just go together,” I suggest, and she smiles.

“If you insist,” she replies.

“Thank you,” I respond with a smile.

I’m taken aback when we enter the kitchen and finds a younger lady in the same uniform as Mrs. Brown.

“Good morning,” the lady greets me with a bright smile. I relax and return the gesture.

“Matilda, this is Phebe, Jeffrey’s guest,” Mrs. Brown introduces.

It starts making sense that this is the person Jeffrey mentioned.

“Hi, Matilda, nice to meet you,” I greet.

“Same here, ma’am,” she shyly replies. She is adorable. I can’t help but notice that she’s in the same age range as Michael.

“Oh, please, drop the ma’am. I’m Phebe,” I tell her.

“Okay, Phebe,” Matilda replies. I take a closer look at her and Mrs. Brown, and I can’t help but notice the slight resemblance.

“Matilda is my daughter,” Mrs. Brown says as if she can read my thoughts.

“Oh, that explains the resemblance. You have a beautiful daughter, Mrs. Brown.”

Matilda smiles blushes at my compliment.

“Thank you, Phebe,” Mrs. Brown says.

“You’re welcome, but I’m only telling the truth. How long have you two worked together?” I ask, surprised by their collaboration.

“For a couple of years now. Jeffrey found Matilda and me on the streets. I was running away from my abusive ex-husband, fearing for our lives,” Mrs. Brown shares with a sad smile. Instantly, my smile drops, and I express my condolences.

Her story resonates with mine, the only difference being my lack of escape.

“It’s fine,” she assures me. “Matilda and I see that part of our lives as a source of strength. Jeffrey was our angel, taking us in, providing a job, shelter, and a decent salary. He also helped me file a lawsuit against Maxwell, ensuring he can’t come near us again,” Mrs. Brown says, smiling.

“That’s wonderful to hear,” I respond.

“Yes. Jeffrey is the most generous man I’ve ever known. I can’t imagine what our lives would be like without him. I pray every day that he finds happiness he has given to Matilda and me,” she says. I give her a sympathetic smile. It pleases me to know that Jeffrey remains the kind-hearted person I’ve always known. Truly, he deserves happiness, as Mrs. Brown has expressed.

“I’m sure he has found happiness with Mildred.” I comment.

Mrs. Brown’s smile quickly fades upon hearing the name. intrigued, I sense there is more to this story.

“Yes, I believe Mildred makes him happy,” I assure her.

“That’s what he thinks, but it’s not the truth. Miss Russell isn’t who everyone thinks she is. I hope Jeffrey realizes it before it’s too late,” she confides.
