“Because of the picture they had in their pocket. I think they’ve been hiding for maybe a week. Probably when Kat saw that light she told me about that day we went to work. Other than that, they haven’t been too forthcoming. I think they’re more scared of whoever sent them here.” Although, after seeing our power, I’m not so sure if that last part is still true.

“We need to know who sent them,” Ash says, twirling his lighter. He looks to be in deep thought.

“Yo, Benji. What the fuck was that?” I’m finally calm enough to not react. I wouldn’t like to go head-to-head with Tyler, and I would have done just that with the adrenaline pumping through me moments ago.

“He would have taken us down.”Even my wolf knows not to mess with Tyler. We’ve known since we met at the Academy. That’s why I befriended him and stuck by his side.

“I tried our power for the very first time, and I’d forgotten how good it felt to be able to unleash it,” I remind him.

“You’ll have to be with Az and Ash when they use it. The high of feeling power will no doubt be the same for them.”

My wolf doesn’t mention Tyler because he doesn’t need to. He’s too composed to get carried away, unless it’s about Kat, then he gets riled up.

“Did you find out anything about Theo?” Ash asks Tyler, who’s leaning against the post with his arms crossed.

“Nope.” He shakes his head in defeat. “Clean as can be. He checks out, I got Andrew to call the Washington State University of Law School he supposedly attended, and they all vouch for him.” I wonder if this information is true—if he really did go to this school.

“He’s got to be supernatural, but what exactly is he?” Tyler stares at the floor, rubbing one thumb over his bottom lip in thought.

“That’s what I’m hoping Az will find out. I called him a little while ago, and he is checking it out with his colleagues,” Ash says as he inhales the last of his cigarette before he throws the butt on the ground and stomps on it.

“Are his colleagues human?” I ask.

“Az said they were,” Ash says, moving in closer and lowering his voice.

“But we thought Theo was human too until Ava tried to shift,” Tyler mumbles, rolling his eyes. This mistake is clearly getting to him. Tyler wanted to push for information to begin with because he felt something wasn’t adding up, but Ash told him to stand down.

“So, what’s your point?” Ash asks defensively, picking up on Tyler’s attitude.

I’m starting to wonder if we’ll have another fight on our hands. Normally I’d be excited and call Az, but right now, we don’t have the time for them to act like kids.

“My point is. . .” Tyler emphasizes. “They could be masking their smell as well.”

“I’ll have Az trail them to be sure.” Ash turns and stalks off, and I’m surprised he didn’t start shit with Tyler. He must feel guilty about calling off the background search on Theo.

Tyler watches Az disappear before he turns his hardened stare on me. “Theo is going to bite us in the ass. We need to find out what he is and what he wants before it’s too late.”

I nod quietly as my wolf scoffs.“Easier said than done.”

Chapter seven

Az

Somethingnagsintheback of my mind as I stare into the grainy picture of Theo that Ash sent us.“It’s almost as if we’ve seen this person before.”My wolf paces back and forth trying to remember. Have we truly seen him before?

“Maybe it’s just because Ezra looks so much like his father.”I find it strange that Ava and Ezra don’t have pictures of their dad on their phones—especially considering how many they have of us already.

“Nah, it’s something else.”I just can’t quite place it. . . yet.

I knew something was off with that piece of shit Kat called a husband. He rubbed me the wrong way. My instincts were right about him. At the time, I hated Kat, so I thought what I felt for Theo was based on resentment for casting his wife out and making her our responsibility somehow.

When he came into our home, he gave me strange vibes. He looked down his nose at each of us like he was carrying a secret that made him superior to us.

“Mr. Samson is ready to see you, sir.” I get up from the chair and walk to the woman sitting at the front desk. She’s got brown hair and brown eyes. I’ve caught her staring at me a couple of times. Maybe the tattoos on my face make her uncomfortable, or maybe she senses my supernatural aura, but whatever it is, this woman can’t keep her eyes off of me.

She knocks on the door before she opens it. “Mr. Samson, Az is here.”

“Let him in,” the man on the other side says. She opens the door wider, and before I step in, she tries to grab my arm to lead me closer into the office, but I pull away quickly.
