“I’ll be outside if you need anything,” she says a little too sweetly. I choose to ignore her weird behavior and drag my eyes to the man sitting behind his desk instead.

I walk up to the man and shake his hand. “Mr. Samson, I’m glad you were able to see me on such short notice.” This is the last man Tyler told me to check on. He said it was difficult to find the few people he found. None of us want to ask Kat who Theo hung out with unless we absolutely have to. I think we should just tell her our assumptions on Theo and the others agree, but Ash believes she has too much on her plate.

“So instead of building our relationship, we’re going for secrecy, really smart of us to go this route,”my wolf annoyingly voices his opinion.

I let go of the man’s hand and sit down across from him. “What can I do for you today?” Mr. Samson looks bored like I’m wasting his time. My appearance doesn’t help any, but I don’t give a fuck about what people think about me.

“I’m here with Business Magazine, and we’re interviewing firms to see who to give our next donation of one hundred thousand dollars to.” I just spit out the first thing that comes to mind. “We’ve narrowed it down to five. We’re now conducting interviews.”

“Interesting. Why haven’t I heard of. . .” The man turns to his computer to start typing, and I think he’s looking to see if the magazine really exists. I have to ask my questions now before he finds out there’s no Business Magazine.

“How long have you known Theo Antonelli?” His fingers freeze on the keyboard.

As soon as I mentioned Theo’s name, his face lit up. “About twelve years.”

“Is there any information you can give us about him?” I grab a notepad and pen from his desk to try and act like I’m writing this all down, but I doubt the man notices.

“What can I not say about the man?” he chuckles like we’re old friends. His demeanor changes. His face softens, his eyes grow glossy, and his shoulders relax. “He’s very generous. A really good guy. Always cracks jokes,” he says, leaning back in his chair and getting more comfortable. “I was so sad to find he and his wife divorced. They made a beautiful couple.” It takes willpower to sit calmly and not slap him for the comment. I’m itching to get my knife out and slice the older man into pieces. But instead, I hold on to the side of the chair and remain somewhat calm.

“Is something wrong?” I may not be as in control as I thought I was.

“Thank you for your time,” I say as I get up abruptly and the chair falls to the floor.

“Wait, don’t you want to know more?” the man stands up, and his brow lifts in confusion. This man won’t give me any information I need.

“I’ve heard enough.” I yank the door open and step out.

My long steps take me further from his office. As I stride past the receptionist, she immediately gets up and hurries right behind me. My hackles rise, preparing for a fight. Is she human or supernatural? Fuck, I’m getting paranoid.

“Sir, can I get you anything?” the woman sounds desperate.

“No.”

“Can I have your number?” I immediately stop in front of the double glass doors. Oh, that’s what she wanted.

“I’m taken,” I say with a small smile and push the door open. I grab my shades from my front pocket, put them on, and walk out of the building.

I checked two other colleagues of Theo’s and found absolutely nothing. I think they were glamoured—they have to be. Our conversation was too perfect, and it sounded rehearsed. They made him sound like the most amazing person ever. But when I talk to Kat and the kids, they say otherwise.

“Some people are fake in front of others, and their true colors come out behind closed doors,”my wolf says. That’s true, but the only people who seem to admire Theo are the ones who speak of him with glazed eyes, and that alone seems questionable.

There is something there I just need to get to the truth of it all.

I get in the car and drive to Kat’s old place. As much as I don’t want to see the house where Kat was married to someone else, I need to find information on this man.

Twenty minutes later, I’m parking across the street at Theo’s house. I should have probably driven something more discreet instead of my cherry-red 1956 Ford Fairlane, but I’m at the point where I don’t fucking care if he sees me.

If we find each other, even better. Maybe I’ll get to kick his ass for being such a dick to Kat and our kids.

“No one messes with our Luna,”my wolf howls.

Hours pass, and I haven’t seen a car pull up. No one here pays me any attention. They all believe nothing will happen within the walls of their cookie-cutter homes.

By three in the morning, I kick my seat back a little more and put one hand over my rumbling stomach. I wish I had thought to bring along some leftovers that Lily stashed in our refrigerator because hunting right now is out of the question. I’ve been sitting here for hours watching the snowfall gather on the roads, and Theo still hasn’t shown up. I’m starting to think he doesn’t come here anymore. Was this place all for show?

I need to take my precious car back home before the snow really piles up. If I get stuck, I’ll never hear the end of it from the guys.

I get out of the car and tug my jacket around me to block the crisp air. Not that the cold does anything to shifters, but when I’m in public, I try to blend in as much as possible. I look both ways to see if anyone has spotted me. Once I’m sure I’m the only one out here, I stop rubbing my hands together like a human and run across the street.
