Ava scoffs, throws him a dirty look, then grins as my younger son walks away. Ava drops my hands and climbs underneath her covers.

Wanting to stay just a little longer, I look around her room. She’s added a lot more since we first moved in. There’s more art, pictures of her friends, and a small sofa in the corner.

I look down at the book in her hands. “What are you reading?”

She follows my eyes and looks down. “Oh, it’s for school. Ryder brought it to me. Apparently I have to study for a test,” she says grumpily. “We’re having tests all next week. I guess what I just went through is considered normal here and no one is treating me differently.”

I shiver at the thought. The first transformation was definitely not normal. “I still don’t know why I didn’t shift though,” she says. The corners of her mouth tighten in sadness.

“Maybe your body was just tired,” I offer up.

I think we’re all just as puzzled. The guys reassure me that if she doesn’t shift, she’ll always have a place to stay here. Apparently other packs shun you if you can’t turn. That’s so devastating to think about.

“Yeah,” she sighs. “Az says it might be all the stress. He wants to go out after finals and try to get me to shift.”

“Can you feel your wolf in there?” she moves her head to the side in confusion.

“I know that there’s something there. I just can’t quite grasp it.” I want to ask her if her wolf talks to her, but I don’t want to disappoint her just in case it doesn’t.

“What are you being tested on?” I look down at her book and find that maybe I should read this too. I need to get familiar with the supernatural world if I’m living in it.

“It’s about the war between the werewolves and lycans,” she says as she looks down at the pages.

“Aren’t they the same thing?” They sure as shit don’t look the same, but I thought they were all wolves.

“We most definitely aren’t.”My wolf huffs as if I’ve just offended her.

She sits up straighter, and her face lights up once again, forgetting her sadness from earlier. “Lycans stand on two legs and are way harder to kill. Silver bullets don’t do shit to them.”

“Language, mija,” I say sternly.

“Oh, sorry, Mom,” she says sheepishly. “This history just gets me so excited,” she says with glee.

“Are they still alive?” I ask curiously.

“Lycans? Nope. They all died out.” Oh wow. Well. . . this turned depressing fast.

“I thought the guys looked big and scary, but this one looks scarier,” I say as I stare at the picture in her book. I shiver just looking at those bright red eyes.

“Do we know how they died?” I ask curiously.

“Nope.” She looks down at her book again. “All it says is that they died out. I’d like to think it was the werewolves who killed them,” she says with so much fierceness, I’m almost taken aback.

Well, I know it’s fucked up to say, but at least I won’t have another creature trying to kill me. I’ve had enough supes trying to put me in my grave.

I look at the time. I don’t want to keep her up any later. “Well, rest up because you have school after this weekend.” It’s Thursday night, so she only has a couple more days before she goes back, and by the looks of it, she’s going to be tested the whole week before winter break starts.

She closes her book and lays it on her end table. “Yeah, I’m starting to feel it,” she yawns, gathering the pile of books from her end table and dragging them over to her desk.

She walks back to her bed and gets under the cover again. “Good night, Mom.”

“Good night, mija.” I get up and kiss her forehead before leaving.

I go across the hall to check on Ezra. I open the door and glare at him. “Alright, alright, Mom. I’m going to bed, sheesh.”

I’m going to kill Tyler for the gaming system and computers that Ezra lives on.

He sees my scowl and turns off all the screens before hopping into bed.
