I wonder if this somehow keeps Ava from shifting. If I’m somehow causing her not to be able to shift. Maybe she’s not even a shifter at all and she’s what I am and I’m causing her harm because my magic has been locked up. It’s a scary thought to think that I may be the cause of her distress.

The next day, I eat breakfast at the dining table with my family, and I try to suppress the anxiety creeping into my every thought. Something is going to happen soon. I feel it deep in my bones. Either with my magic, Ava, or Theo. I don’t know what it is yet, but I spend the entire day spacing out.

I’m so deep in thought that I don’t hear Tyler until I bump into him. “Oh sorry, Tyler.”

“You okay, Kat?” His features are etched with concern as he grabs my shoulders to steady me.

I think about lying and telling him that I’m completely fine, but he’ll just see right through it. Plus, I hate when Ava tells me everything is fine when it isn’t. It’s not fair to do it to someone else.

“I-I-uh, I don’t know.” Although I want to be truthful, I’m not sure how to explain what is going on right now. “I’m just feeling a little unsettled.”

“About?” he pries.

“I can almost feel something big coming, and I’m not sure what it is, and it scares me.” His face softens.

“Whatever it is, Kat, we’ll be ready.” He sounds as sure as Az did.

I nod and force a smile. “I’m going to rest before my shift tonight.” He reluctantly lets me go, but not before giving me a kiss on the forehead.

I go to my room and stare at the tattoo before lying on the bed and drifting off to sleep.

Evening comes, and I’m nearly ready for work. “Almost done,” I call out to Benji when I sense him by the door.

“I’m playing tonight.” Since I’ve watched him play for the first time, he’s been practicing his songs in my room sometimes. He tries to finish a full song, but that never happens. Right in the middle of it, I always end up on top of him, and he moves his guitar to the side of the bed while I’m ripping his shirt off trying to get to his bare chest.

Benji gets a look and winks, already knowing where my mind wanders.

“Now I know how you get Kitty Kat,” he says knowing well how much my body craves him. “But we’ll have an audience at the Crescent Lounge.” I grab my lipstick and face my vanity table. I can watch his reflection through the mirror, and my eyes flick over to him. “I want you to know that I don’t give a fuck who’s watching. If you want to fuck me then go ahead.” He smirks. Well, that wasn’t what I was expecting.

I chuckle. “Benji, I don’t know how I’ll be able to contain myself.” I slump on my chair dramatically using my hand to fan myself. “Every time I hear your voice, all I want to do is take my clothes off,” I say sarcastically.

“I have that effect on women.” He shrugs nonchalantly.

“There will be no sex in front of everybody.” Ash comes into my room. “Az was too careless when you guys did it in the alley, and so were you Benji.” He folds his arms and leans against the door.

Ash, as handsome as he looks, reminds me of an old man. “You’re such a prude, old man.” Benji goes to my mirror and fixes his hair.

“Aren’t you guys the same age?” I ask. Last time I checked, they were all equally as old.

“We are, but I don’t act that way.” Benji faces me with a look of mock hurt that makes me laugh.

Ash throws his arms up in the air and waves them in exasperation before leaving the room.

After work, I’m completely beat. The kids are hanging out with their friends and the guys are downstairs in the kitchen talking about the possibility of how they can remove the heart from my face. I’m too tired to weigh in on the conversation, so I go upstairs to my bed instead.

I grab a paranormal, why-choose romance book about dragons by Dreia Wells, and when I can no longer pry my eyes open, I drift off to sleep, not waiting up to see who sleeps next to me tonight.

I’m woken up by the feeling that someone is watching me. I try to control my breathing, but it becomes harsher. I think of my dagger that I keep under my pillow, and my hand creeps up slowly until my fingertips wrap around the handle.

How did the guys not notice someone breaking in? Thoughts of being kidnapped again run through my head. No, there’s no way I’ll let anyone take me again.

Fisting my weapon, I sit up abruptly, only to find a man with platinum blonde hair staring at me.

“Fuck, Ash! Why you gotta stand there all creepy and shit?” I let out a long breath to ease my anxiety.

He clears his throat. “Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.”

“Well, you did a shit job,” I say, putting my weapon back under my pillow. Since there’s no threat, I don’t want to accidentally stab anyone.
