I sigh, wondering how she’s going to take this next part, but I know it’s not fair to keep information from her—especially when it’s about her kids. “Az went to check on Theo. His family isn’t checking out. Tyler is checking all his records, and they’re—just too clean. Whether you want to believe it or not, he’s supernatural.”

“So. . .” She puts her head down thinking the information through. “Ezra might become a supernatural too?”

“Yeah, we think so.” I slump back in my chair, folding my arms across my chest.

“Did Ava have violet eyes?” I hesitate and pray she doesn’t ask more because I don’t want to lie, but we’re not ready to tell her the truth.

“She did. . . No she didn’t.”But they’re something different. She doesn’t ask about my slight hiccup. I’m not really lying to her, I’m just not telling her the whole truth.

She rubs her ring finger where her wedding band rested, and I try not to show how much I’m jealous of the fact that she notices something missing there.

After a moment she continues. “I thought supernaturals can smell other supernaturals.”

“We can, but for some reason, we couldn’t tell when Theo and Dante came to our home.” The moment the wordsour homeleave my lips, my heart skips a beat. I love the sound of that. Kat belongs to us as much as we belong to her. “No, let me rephrase. With Dante, we know his scent was masked because of Krissy, but with Theo, we have no fucking clue.” There’s something I’ve been holding in my chest that I need to get out. “Katarina, the next time I see your ex-husband, I can’t promise that I’ll be civil. I want to shred that man into pieces.” She laughs like this is amusing to her, but she says nothing about it. The way her eyes flash to violet is confirmation enough that her wolf wants a piece of him too.

She touches the bridge of her nose as she thinks over our conversation. “I wonder if Dan knew Theo was supernatural, and I wonder if Jess knew Theo was one too.” I tilt my head in confusion. “Oh um. . . I sort of forgot to tell you guys that there was a note hidden on Jess’s body when we went to visit her.” She chokes up, thinking about her dead friend. She clears her throat before continuing. “The note said she knew about Dan, and she had something important she wanted to tell me, but I’m guessing she got killed before she was able to write it down.” Her voice is full of sorrow. “There have been so many people in my life keeping secrets. I’m grateful you told me, Ash,” she says sincerely, and I almost tell her, but I bite the inside of my lips to keep them tightly shut.

I grab her hand from the table and give it a squeeze, letting her know she’s not alone.

She sighs. “I wish I knew more, but he was closed off about his family. We’d rarely go out to see them.” She brings the conversation back to Theo.

“Well, whoever he had asparentswere definitely fakes.” I internally cringe for being so blunt.

“Well fuck,” she says, pulling her hand away from me, and I find myself missing the warmth. She finishes the last of her food.

Before my nerves get the best of me, I spill out, “So remember that day we had sex.”

It’s like a fog has been lifted and she smirks. “How could I forget?”

“Well, what happened with us is. . .” I clear my throat, “is knotting.”

“Ah,” she says as if she understands the whole reason I brought her to breakfast. “This is the conversation you were trying to have the night it all went down.” Her eyes glaze over as if she’s not here for the moment. I’ve probably brought back memories from that day. She shivers and focuses on me again.

“You were tired,” I tell her, hoping she understands that I didn’t want to necessarily keep anything from her.

“It was a long day, Ash.” She sounds tired again, she’s probably reliving that whole day.

“It only happens with mates. I thought this was going to be a harder conversation, but you already know what we are to each other.” This part might be a little more difficult. “You said it yourself, things for the future are uncertain. The only way for us to be strong as a pack is to . . . mate and form our bond.”

“So, what does that entail?”

“A full-blown orgy.”

Her cheeks redden and the only thing she says is, “Oh,” as she looks down at her empty plate.

“There’s one more thing.” Her eyes immediately gaze over mine. Fuck, I don’t know how to say this. She’s going to kill me.

“So. . .”

“Just spit it out, Ash.”

“When the knotting happens when you are on your cycle. . .” fuck my palms are sweaty. I try to use my pants to get the sweat off.

“Ash!” she yells.

“Sorry, it’s just that I’m just really nervous, but I want you to know that at the time, I didn’t know you were my mate.”

I take a drink of my coffee before finally saying, “That’s how shifters get a female pregnant.” Her jaw drops to the floor, and her eyes widen in shock.
