He hounded me until I bought him a new one. It cost me a pretty penny. Never doing that shit again.

So I continue to pace around, waiting for the opportunity to be able to leave here and go look for the person who took them.

“Go ahead and dial his number.” Tyler signals to everyone in the room as he sits on the computer with our beta Matt.

Kat picks up her phone with shaking hands. Beads of sweat come down her brow.

It rings for a long time then goes straight to voicemail. I wonder if he’s changed his number.

I want to punch something, anything, to get rid of this anger. It looks like Tyler already went to the gym this morning to get his aggression out.

“Try again,” Tyler says from his station.

Kat dials the number and puts it on speaker again. I don’t think he’ll pick up, but after the fourth ring he answers. “Theo,” my mate says in a small voice. I hate that she even has to say that man’s name.

“Oh, Kat. Thank you for doing me a favor and killing Krissy.” Kat’s whole body freezes. That’s not what we were expecting to hear. We’re all stunned, but we should’ve already known. “I couldn’t kill her myself because of a blood oath we made, and she was holding onto the power I needed. I had to promise her something that she wanted—your power,” he confirms Amara’s suspicions. “I didn’t think you had the power in you, but after all these years, it was only dormant. I should have known. I was with you for a long time, but I just thought you were defective.” There’s a collective growl between us all. I can’t wait to get rid of this worthless trash.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Kat says as Tyler signals her to keep the conversation flowing.

“Don’t pretend you don’t know. The bursts of powers started showing up when you got bit by that idiot.” Wow, and here I thought they were close, but both of them never liked each other.

“Theo, do you have the kids?” her voice cracks, and I want to comfort her, but she needs to keep her head clear to deal with this man.

He chuckles, that’s the only indication we need.

He has them.

“Listen Kat, as much as I want to chit chat, I know Tyler is tracking me, so we’re going to have to cut this short. Just know that I’m coming for you.” He hangs up before she can say anything else.

Chapter eighteen

Kat

“Shit!Shit!Shit!”Tylershouts, his frustration getting the best of him, and he grabs his screen and throws it on the floor along with the equipment that was attached to it. Everyone in the room stops what they’re doing to stare at us. “I was so close, but he knew we were trying to track him.” He puts his hands on the side of his face in defeat. If he had long hair, I could imagine him pulling his strands out.

“I’m sorry,” I say, feeling like this is all my fault. I should’ve kept him talking for longer. I was pretty fucking nervous and absolutely shocked. I thought I was going to throw up my breakfast.

I still can’t believe the words that came out of Theo’s mouth. I mean, I know they’re the truth. There’s no point in lying, but was anything about our situation real? That leaves the question of whether Ava will have my powers or his. I should have asked him what he was. I hate how easily I was fooled by that man.

I only hope that when he realizes Ava can’t shift, he won’t try to hurt or kill her. But what if she has my powers? Will he sell her out to the council?

Before my mind wanders to the worst-case scenarios, Tyler comes to stand in front of me and holds onto my shoulders.

“No, don’t apologize, Kat. It’s not your fault. Theo knows a lot about us, more so than we know about him.” There’s a feeling deep down in the pit of my stomach that makes me anxious. There is more to this man than I ever knew. The thought that I actually lived with him scares me the most. He was hiding something in plain sight, and I never suspected any different. Ash did ask me about him being a supernatural, but I shrugged it off. There’s no ignoring it now that he basically admitted to it.

I walk away from Tyler and go to pick up the mess on the floor. I need a distraction, there are too many rampant thoughts crossing my mind, and none of them are helpful. A few people come over to help us pick up. Once Tyler’s calm enough, he grabs a broom to sweep up the shards of glass littering the floor.

“So the man knows a whole lot about us, but we know nothing about him,” Az says as his face twists in anger. He doesn’t like that at all and neither do I. He stands still in his position, not making a move to help us clean.

“Do we have anything else about his past that I can check out?” Az asks as he steps away from our group, choosing to stand alone in a corner instead. I think he hates that we currently have everyone’s attention. If he could make himself disappear, I think he would.

“I’ve checked absolutely everything, chased every crumb. I’ve given you everything I found.” He sighs walking back to his desk with his head hanging low like he’s debating his next words. I don’t like the look of defeat on his face, and I open my mouth, but before I can get a word out, he says, “I did find something else.” He pulls a piece of paper from his pocket and unfolds it.

That stops Az from blending himself further into the shadows. “Smart Technology.” Tyler says as if we should know what that means. We wait a moment before he begins again, “I found the location of the woman with violet eyes.” He gazes at me then, and his eyes are full of sorrow. “She could have answers for you, Kat.” My heart thunders in my chest. Is this it? Am I one step closer to finding out who I really am?

I don’t want to get too excited just in case it’s a dead end, but it’s kind of hard not to be slightly thrilled at the idea that I may finally be getting the answers I’ve been searching for. After a hard day, I need some good news. I need to know that something is finally going our way. I need to keep the hope that everything will be fine.

“Oh, so that’s where you were last night?” Ash questions, almost accusingly, as he rubs his chin in thought.
