“That’s two questions, but I’ll answer the first one. We are shifters, and we all have magic. We were told that only a sliver of the shifter population has magic.” Umm... what? I look back at Ash and he looks just as confused.

“How did you end up here?” Probably a dumb question, but I need to ask if only to confirm that they were taken.

“Nope my turn,” she says, and I try not to growl in annoyance.

“Where are you planning on taking us, and are we experiments?” Fair question, and I’m actually glad they’re skeptical about this situation.

“With our pack,” Ash replies, looking at each of them as they cower. It’s the alpha energy.

“We’re planning on finding your family, and to answer your next question, no, we won’t experiment on any of you,” Ash continues.

They all laugh and we look at each other before looking at the group in front of us. “Our families are all dead.”

Chapter twenty-one

Ash

“Allyourfamiliesaredead?” I ask, I must have misheard them. I step closer and immediately remember that I don’t want to spook them, so I take a step back. I don’t want them to feel like we’re a threat.

Our auras already give out alpha energy. When we walk by, supernaturals and humans can sense our energy. That’s why people don’t usually fuck with us. The ones who do, well, if they’re stupid enough to try, the only thing they remember is our faces before they black out on the floor. I don’t want to scare the kids more than they already are.

They’ve been through shit. You can tell by the way their bodies sag with exhaustion. They are malnourished and sickly from all the poking and probing that was done to them.

“Our parents are dead,” Another guy answers slower this time. “By hunters.” Az and I growl in response. I’m glad Benji isn’t here to hear this, or else he’d lose his shit. He’s very testy when it comes to hearing about hunters, especially in reference to killing family members.

“I thought we got rid of all hunters?” I turn to Az. “What the fuck is going on? They just started showing up out of nowhere.” He shrugs, just as confused as I am. I’m glad we both saw them with our own eyes because we wouldn’t have believed these kids otherwise. We made sure we got rid of every single one of them. We did it all for Benji.

“They work for him.” A blonde kid with blue eyes steps forward.

“Who ishim?” I ask curiously. Maybe they can give us more information on the person that owns Smart Technology.

“A shifter that works with the hunters seems out of the ordinary; it just doesn’t click,” Az replies. “They’re very nature is to hunt us.”

The brunette shrugs. “Maybe they had a deal.”

“I guess everything we thought we knew is absolutely false. Here we thought that the almighty council wanted to protect the best interest of the supernaturals, but now we know how wrong we’ve been.” Az looks like he’s about to burst with rage. I need to get these kids out before he freaks them out and they won’t want to leave with us.

Katarina and Benji come into the room, and my attention is on my mate when there’s a collective gasp. I turn around to see what has them so surprised. They’re staring at Katarina, and I don’t like the way their eyes widen.

“The guys have taken all the other kids out of here. Is this the last door?” Benji asks, looking back and forth between the kids and Katarina.

“What’s going on?”he asks mentally.

“No clue, but they see something in Katarina,”I answer.“I’ve got it handled. Go get the others before we run out of time.”

Out loud I say, “There’s two more. But you’ll have to figure out what keys go in the lock.” I hand it to Katarina and they sprint out of the room.

In the distance, I hear her ask Benji, “How are you guys talking? Why couldn’t I hear it?” I don’t focus on his response, instead, I bring my attention back here.

“She—” The girl with blue hair stutters. “She has violet eyes.” How the hell does this girl have blue hair? It’s been bugging me since I laid eyes on her. But there’s no time to ask.

“Indeed she does. Does anyone else around here have the same color eyes?” I ask hopeful that we’ll maybe be able to get answers for Katarina after all. This is the one thing I truly hope I can give her. Finding out who she really is.

“Yeah, but she’s locked up tightly.” Her eyes are full of sadness, and I know that when we find the woman, she won’t be in good condition. I debate whether I want Katarina to go through with it. Maybe she’s better off not seeing it. Maybe I should take a look before she does. “We have only seen her a handful of times.”

“Where is she?”

“You go down this corridor and take two lefts. The door is sealed more so than ours was.” So it means she’s been kept hidden. She’s a powerful tool if she can make supernaturals do what she wants them to do, and in the council’s hand, that’s absolutely dangerous. I wonder how long she’s been held down here.
