“We’re ready to take the ones in here,” Jacob says. All sets of eyes shoot to my beta, assessing him and wondering if they should trust him. I hate that look in their eyes. They’re too young to have so much distrust in a person. I hate that they’ve been through so much without anyone helping them.

“It’s your choice whether you want to stay or go,” Az says, surprising me. I thought he’d try to take them all. “You already know what life is in here, why not give it a shot in the outside world?” He’s giving them a choice. They probably have never had one before.

“For most of us, this is all we know,” she says sadly, and my heart aches for them. The kids nod their heads in agreement. I can’t imagine what this is doing to Az right now.

“All we can do is offer you guys a better chance at living,” he says softly. I’ve never heard him speak so tenderly to anyone, not even Katarina. This situation is getting to him.

“Are you okay, Az?”I ask through our mental link.

He looks tense as fuck the way he grips the hilt of his knife, and he sighs deeply before answering,“I don’t know.”

The kids look at each other before answering, “We’ll go.” Az’s shoulders sag in relief. He was going to have them make their own choice. That is the first step to what freedom will be like for them. They’ll finally have options.

“We have to go now!” One of our guards yells. “There are vans heading in this direction.”

“How much time do we have?” Az asks, looking behind the entrance to the room.

“About fifteen minutes.” Another one responds.

“You three,” I point to the guys that just came down here. “Help us get the other kids. The rest of you start making your way to the vans.”

Everyone moves at a quicker pace than they did before. We meet Benji and Katarina.

I grab Katarina’s arm before she walks any further. She stops to look at me with an eyebrow raised, probably wondering why I’ve just stopped her from helping the other children.

“What’s going on, Ash?” I let go of her elbow.

“The kids told me there’s a person with violet eyes just like yours.” I almost feel like her own eyes get brighter. Now that she cut the heart from her face, her eyes seem to glow.

“Where is she?” Katarina demands, taking a step closer to me. I want to grab her and comfort her, but this is not the time. We have a very limited window. We need to get what we came here for and go. Plus, we now have to transport one hundred kids out of here.

“I just want you to know . . .” I hope she doesn’t go in there expecting a healthy woman. “The kids sounded sad for the lady, so I don’t think she’s in good shape.” I’m scared of what we may find. I have to wonder if this is the reason the council wanted to make sure Katarina wasn’t athreatto them or if it was because they wanted to use her as an experiment.

“I don’t care, Ash. I need to find her.” Her eyes glow brighter as her power leaks through. Once she notices, she shakes her head, probably trying to clear her mind.

“Are you sure you’re ready, Katarina?”

She bites her lip before answering with determination. “I’m ready.” It’s why we came here originally, but I’m glad we found the kids along the way.

“Go,”Az tells me through our mind link.“We’ll meet you guys there.”I look back to see my brothers rushing to get the kids out of their cells. Because that’s exactly what this place is, a prison for them.

With that, we make a run in the direction the kids told us.

We come to an isolated room, and I try the knob, but it’s locked. Kat pulls out the keys and tries to unlock the door, but there’s no place to insert it.

“I don’t think any of those are going to work,” Tyler shouts, and I see all three of them sprinting toward us. He points at the scanner located off to the side.

Katarina and I both look at each other, surprised we missed the obvious handprint scanner.

“We’ll just have to bring the dead body of one of the guards. Did anyone see which guard had keys?” Tyler asks. “That might be the one in charge.”

“The one with the knife in between his eyes.” With that, Tyler runs back, leaving us alone.

A minute later, he’s hauling the dead man on his shoulder like he weighs nothing. Tyler grabs the dead guard’s hand and presses it against the red sensors. When the circles turn from red to green and the door unlocks, he throws the man on the floor with a loud thump.

When the door clicks open, we all look at Katarina. “I’ll go first,” Benji shouts over the alarm.

We’re startled by a loud voice down the hall. “Alpha’s, they’re coming in hot. They’ll be here in five minutes or less.”
