“Thanks Jacob,” I tell him as he approaches us.

“All the kids are in vehicles. The guys will be here soon.” By the guys, he means the rest of the betas.

“Wait for us up there.” He watches me skeptically. “We’ll be right behind you.”

“Uhh . . .” He scratches his head. “We don’t want to leave you guys here.”

“That’s an order.” I hate doing this, but I really want them up there with the kids and helping keep an eye out. We’ve got our magic, now we can protect ourselves and Katarina.

With that, he runs away. We switch our attention back to the door. Benji pushes it open and stalls.

“Benji, what the fuck?” Az growls right behind him.

“Benji, get the fuck out of the way if you’re not going to move,” Tyler growls behind Az.

Katarina is right in front of me, and I take the rear. She looks behind me, but I only shrug. I have no clue what’s going on.

“Hey, Benji?” No response. “You—okay?”

He finally moves and we make it past the door. I look at Benji.

This is not what we were expecting. I don’t look around the room because the look of horror on my brother’s face stops me from moving forward.

“Benji, are you alright?” Katarina asks as she walks toward him. His face pales, and he’s too stunned to formulate words.

“Maybe you should go back to the van, Benji. You aren’t looking too good,” Az voices with his knife in one hand. He’s as worried as the rest of them.

“Hey big brother,” A feminine voice startles all of us. That stops Katarina in her tracks, and we finally turn around to see who spoke.

There is a girl standing on the other side of the huge room. She’s the mirror image of Benji. Can this be his dead sister?

No, it can’t be.

He’s told us about his sister and how he lost her during a hunter raid. He went to a shop to go pick up her dress, and that’s when they decided to attack. She was dating a boy whose father was a hunter.

“Are . . . are you working with the hunters?” Benji finally speaks up. He’s holding so much tension in his jaw.

“Benji, it’s not like that,” she answers softly. I’m not sure what to think of her. If she wasn’t his sister, we would’ve killed her without hesitation. Maybe it was for the best that we didn’t see her first. I have no doubt Az would’ve thrown his knife or Tyler would have attacked without giving it a second thought.

My mind doesn’t want to trail down that rabbit hole, but I have to wonder, and I’m sure my brothers are thinking this too. Did she help hurt those kids?

“Then how is it, Zoe? I’ve cried for you and made myself sick thinking I failed you.” Yeah, and we extinguished the hunter population because of it, or at least we believed we did until recently.

Chapter twenty-two

Tyler

Zoe?Ohfuckthiscan’t be good.

The only time I’ve heard that name is the only time he told us about his baby sister. Could she be one and the same?

“It has to be. There is no other Zoe he’s ever talked about,”my wolf says slowly, our eyes drifting from our brother to his apparent sister.

Benji takes hesitant steps toward his sister and stops right in front of her. He takes notice like we all do that she isn’t bound by any shackles or restraints. She looks like she’s free to go anytime she wants.

She notices the same thing because she says, “I’m still a prisoner, Benji. I just—I just don’t have shackles.” She raises her hands toward us, proving that she’s not held by anything physically.

Benji opens his mouth to speak, but he gets choked up. “I grieved for you, for our father and our moms, and this whole time you’ve been alive?” His voice is raw and full of anguish. His eyes are teary, and my heart goes out to my brother. It’s a hard moment to witness.
