Kat walks forward and stands next to him, grabbing his hand. He takes it in his and grips it like she’s his lifeline, and maybe she is. I want to ask him if he’s okay through our mind link, but I don’t want to distract him from this moment.

“What are you doing here, Zoe?” Zoe’s eyes finally roam to Kat’s, and her eyes widen. Another emotion overtakes her body . . . fear.

“Benji, get away from her!” she screams in horror. She walks toward her brother and my mate. I don’t like that at all. I don’t know anything about this woman other than her being Benji’s baby sister and someone who was supposed to be dead.

Az takes the closest side next to Benji, and I take over the other side. I don’t want to hurt Zoe, but if she does anything to threaten my mate’s life, I’ll do anything to protect Kat.

Ignoring us, she stands in front of her brother, keeping a small distance between them. Zoe pays us no mind, and her eyes are still on Kat. The way her mouth twists in distaste at her presence makes me want to eliminate the threat. My hand begins to shake with adrenaline. We don’t have much time, and I want Kat to get her answers, but Zoe is in the way.

“Benji,” Ash warns him subtly, letting him know that he needs to make a decision now.

“I don’t who the fuck you are, but I’m not letting you mess with my brother.” In one swift movement, Zoe grabs the medical scissors from the table and goes straight for Kat.

Az immediately grabs Zoe’s hand before it makes contact with our mate. “Benji!” he shouts. “Tell your sister to calm the fuck down or else I’ll have to knock her out.”

“Zoe, this is my mate.” He pushes Kat behind him to protect her. Kat is short, and Benji towers over her, hiding our mate from Zoe’s view.

“No.” She shakes her head. The look of horror on her face makes me glad Kat can’t see any of this. “It can’t be.”

She runs to another door. I didn’t even notice it there. This is bad, I’m being too careless with our surroundings. Seeing Benji in shock and then finding out his sister is alive has made me forget about checking the area. I take a moment to really look at where we are.

There’s equipment you’d see at a doctor’s office. There are ten beds in total. I can imagine this is where they pick and probe those poor kids. I truly hope Zoe isn’t one of the bad guys. I don’t know what that’ll do to Benji, but I can’t let her live knowing she’s hurt innocent shifters.

“What do you mean?” Benji asks, biting his lip and looking at his sister with confusion.

“I mean,” she emphasizes, “that this is your mate.” She runs to the back and opens a sliding door, revealing a woman in a large water tank, wearing a two-piece bathing suit.

“Is it the woman with violet eyes?”my wolf asks, our attention on what’s in front of us.

“I think we finally found her.”I sag in relief.

The woman looks oddly familiar, but—I can’t pinpoint exactly why that is.

“Does she look familiar to anyone else?” Benji asks softly, echoing my thoughts.

“Probably because she’s your mate,” Zoe snaps, and Kat softly growls. Ash rubs her shoulders to reassure her that she’s ours.

We walk further into the room. Zoe keeps her eyes on Kat. I get that this is Benji’s sister, but he hasn’t seen her in over a century; she may not be the person he remembers.

I stand next to Kat while Az takes the other side, and Ash doesn’t move from the rear. Benji walks up to the tank.

“This is the woman we’re looking for,” Benji says as he gazes at the woman. I look around the tank trying to figure out how the hell we’re going to take her out of here.

“Because she’s your mate.” Her sister rolls her eyes as if she doesn’t understand why we don’t believe her.

“No, no. It’s like I’ve seen her before.” Benji puts a hand on the glass.

“Benji, she’s your mate. She was locked in here because of the prophecy.”

“What prophecy?” Az asks, turning his head to the side, looking nothing like a human anymore. His animal side has taken over, and we have to make sure he doesn’t pounce on Zoe. I know Benji would never forgive him if he hurt his sister.

We’re stuck.

We need to leave this place before we get caught, but now we have a giant tank and Benji’s sister to figure out. How the hell are we going to get the woman out of the tank?

Her eyes are closed like she’s in deep slumber. She has a mask over her nose and mouth to help her breathe in the water.

“The prophecy he’s trying to prevent. The one where he’ll be stopped.” Still doesn’t ring anything, but there’s no time to ask her to explain.
