Ash grabs Kat from behind, pulling her close to his chest. “This is our mate. I don’t know who that lady in there is. She does look—oddly familiar, but I know without a doubt that she’s nothing to us.”

“Well that would suck for this poor lady,” Zoe says, watching her.

“Why is she in here?” Kat speaks for the first time, and I hate it because Zoe’s evil stare goes back on my mate.

She walks to the side of the tank and hits a red button, and the water starts to drain. “I can’t let her out or else she’ll die. She’s been drained too much. This is the only way she survives. The water has magical properties that sustain her life force. She’s tried to kill herself a couple of times but hasn’t succeeded.”

“Krissy tried to drain her of her powers, but I don’t think it worked,” Kat says softly. She’s probably thinking about how it could’ve been her next if she had shown any signs of magic. Right now, I’m grateful Jess was able to hide her powers.

As soon as the water is gone, she opens her eyelids, and the first thing we notice are her eyes. They look exactly like Kat’s. Kat walks toward the tank, and Ash lets her go, but he keeps a close eye on Zoe as he walks closely behind her.

The way she stares at us gives me goosebumps. It’s as if she recognizes us.

Kat puts her palm against the glass and the lady stares at it for a moment before she puts hers on there, mimicking Kat’s.

“Can she talk?” Kat whispers, and Zoe narrows her eyes. I don’t like the way she’s looking at her. If she wasn’t Benji’s sister, I’d have gotten rid of her by now.

“Zoe, answer her,” Benji snaps. Her eyes widen before they turn into slits.

“She can. But—she’s very weak,” Zoe says with a look of sorrow. If she feels this way about this woman, maybe she was able to care for the kids that were tested on.

“Are you related to me?” Kat asks.

She takes off her mask. “I don’t know.” The voice is low and weak.

“There were only a handful of us left before my capture.” She turns her eyes to us like we’re the cause of her pain, the reason she was locked up.

“I lived a beautiful life with my kid and my husbands. All it took was one day for my world to be destroyed.” Her beautiful face morphs into anger.

“What are we?” Kat asks.

“We were called violet voyagers, feared by many supernaturals, and we’ve been killed off for our power.”

“The person that held you hostage, what did he do to you?” Kat demands.

She laughs like a woman that has lost her mind. Kat startles and takes a step back. Ash is there to rub her shoulders.

“He thought those four were my mates, and he was afraid of the prophecy, and it ended up happening anyway. I wish I could see his face before I die,” she states.

Kat asks the question we’re all thinking, “What is the prophecy?”

I want to ask why we should care about the prophecy, but I stay silent to let Kat get her answers.

“Chaos will happen on earth if he brings them back.” Bring who back? I have so many questions. I look toward my brothers wearing the same expression on their faces. They want to know more but are keeping their lips tightly shut. “You’re the chosen one, not all of us have that power.”

“Why are you trapped in here?” I wonder if Kat sees herself in this woman. I wonder if she’s afraid to be trapped like she is. I won’t ever let her be trapped.

“Because for a certain time, I was useful to him, until he found out I didn’t have what he was looking for,” she responds as she looks at Zoe then back up at Kat. “He drains me of my power, the same as the kids in here.”

“But why—why does he do it?”

“The man is frightening,” she continues. “He’s the supernatural our community should be afraid of, not us.” Kat nods her head in agreement.

“He’s the only one of his kind. He used me to control everyone around him. He used my family, and then he locked me in here to keep me from being able to sway him my way.”

“What is he trying to do?” I ask.

“Open a portal that’s been closed for a very, very long time.”
