“What’s on the other side?” Kat asks.

“Danger,” she responds, and I can feel a chill run down my spine at that one word.

“Guys we have to go. They’re approaching,” Az says as he looks down at his phone.

“Is everyone in the vans?” I ask.

“Yeah, everyone but you guys,” Matt answers from the doorway.

“Leave me the keys to ours and go,” Az tells him.

“But . . .” Matt’s eyes widen, wanting to argue when he knows he shouldn’t even try.

“I said go,” Az shouts harsher this time. Matt hands me the keys and leaves.

“What’s our power?” Kat asks quickly.

“We can sway supernaturals. We controlled kingdoms before humans took over. There’s . . .” It sounds like she wants to say something else but stops herself. I don’t think Kat notices.

Kat is speechless, but her violet eyes burn brighter than ever before.

Then the lady in the tank whispers, “Remember.”

It crashes through us like a freight train, and we fall to the floor, holding our heads like our brains are about to explode.

“It’s been Theo all along,” Ash growls.

“This is his facility and he controls the council,” I pant. Dread fills every fiber in my body.

“Now, Zoe,” she commands. Zoe gets right to it, turning around facing the computer closest to the tank. Zoe starts typing furiously as the lady puts her mask back on. I don’t notice the liquid dripping out of the tube of the mask until she closes her eyes.

The violet eyed woman is dead.

Chapter twenty-three

Benji

ItwasTheoallalong. He is the one behind all this fucking mess.

What makes me angry is that he was right under our fucking nose this whole time. He was in our home; we let him into our sanctuary. My claws come out from my fingertips ready to rip everything in sight.

My biggest regret right now is not killing him then and there. I don’t have to look at my brothers to know they’re thinking the same thing. If we knew she was our mate back then, things would have gone very differently, but that leaves the question, would we have made it out alive if we tried to attack?

Theo seems to be a very dangerous and powerful man. Recruiting Krissy made him untouchable. Now it all makes sense why he married Kat. But how did he know about my mate? How did he know anything? When you’ve been alive a long time, you can know where to look and who to track, but this was never on our radar. We were at a disadvantage.

I hate that we had our chance twice to kill him, and we missed the opportunity both times. I’m not letting him go next time.

I look over at my mate, and Kat looks like she’s about to puke. Ash is keeping her steady, grabbing her shoulders while she sways back and forth. Az looks like he wants to destroy the whole room and look for someone to bleed out. It will suck for whoever decides to cross his path next.

I look over at Tyler, and he watches me with concern. I don’t like it. It makes me feel like he thinks I’m one second away from breaking apart. I want to tell him I’ll be fine, but the truth is, I don’t fucking know if I’ll ever be okay.

My wolf wants to get out of my human body and be near our sister. As soon as he saw her, he immediately recognized her. He wanted to shift as soon as he smelled her familiar floral scent that reminds us of the time we lived with the circus. That was back when everything was good and my parents were alive, before I became ruthless. Because underneath my playful exterior, I’m just as bad as my brothers.

I’ve lived my life thinking that because of me, Zoe didn’t survive, because I was a drunken mess, I was more worried about sleeping around with different women in each town. The guilt ate me up every day. After the attack, it was unbearable. I thought about taking my own life a few times because I couldn’t face my demons, and now Zoe is standing here in the flesh, healthy as can be.

She looks older now, her hair is longer, and she’s taller. She looks more sure of herself, and she even carries herself with more confidence, but she’ll always be my little sister.

Tyler is the only person other than me that has a sibling. The way he takes a long breath with so many deep emotions running across his face, I think he’s putting himself in my shoes. What would he have done ifhisbrother had died only to realize he was very much alive?
