“Better.” She yawns, which makes me do the same.

“Do you want me to come. . .”

“N-no,” she stutters, just stay there. “You can see me tomorrow. I really just want my rest, and I know you need yours too. Doctor Jones is here. He said he’ll call you if anything happens to me, but nothing will happen. I’m feeling better already.” She tries to sound enthusiastic, but it falls flat.

“Okay.” I do trust the doctors here. They kept Benji and Tyler alive while I found a cure to help them.

“I have to tell you something, just not tonight. We all need the rest.” I want to push for more, but Ash doesn’t let me.

“Come on,” Ash says, dragging me closer to him. “Let’s get some sleep. It’s been a long day.”

“Love you, Ava.”

“Love you too, Mom.” With that, she hangs up the phone, and I give it back to Ash.

I’m lying in bed fast asleep when my phone rings. I immediately get up, worried it has something to do with Ava.

“It better be the doctor calling us at this time,”my wolf groans.

“It better be important,”I agree with a yawn.

I stop breathing when I see the name pop up on my screen. Why the fuck is he calling me? Is he looking for Krissy or Dan? Fuck! How am I going to answer his questions without revealing who they were?

I need a game plan. Maybe I’ll pretend like I’m on one of those Spanish telenovelas and act extremely shocked by everything he says.

“Better yet. Don’t answer it,”my wolf tells me.

I bite my lip until I can taste the warm copper on my tongue.

“Hello,” I answer in a sleepy voice.

“Oh great. This again,”my wolf says sleepily.

There’s no greeting. “Kat, I want shared custody of our kids.” I sit up straighter. My breathing stops. Everything becomes so still and silent. As soon as Ash hears who’s on the other side of the phone, his body goes rigid next to me.

The grogginess I was feeling mere seconds ago is now gone.

“Fuck no!” Ash says, clearly wide awake now. “He gave up his rights. He didn’t want them, and it’s strange that he suddenly wants them now,” he whispers and rubs his chin in thought.

I’m so shocked watching the scene unfold right in front of my eyes, I forget for a quick second who is on the other side of the phone call. When he says, “Kat,” his voice sounds darker somehow. I don’t know if it has always been this dark or if this shadow hanging between us is new.

“No.”

I pull the phone away from my ear, ready to hang up when he says, “Kat, you can’t keep my children away from me. They’re mine too.” Oh, now they’re his too? Where was that attitude when we were signing the divorce papers, or better yet, when he threw us out of the house and cast doubt on the paternity of my kids?

“Yeah, but you didn’t want them, remember? You didn’t even think they were yours.” I remind him. My voice is stern and confident, leaving no room for confusion.

“Well, now I do.” I can only imagine him gripping his phone with white knuckles.

“What’s changed?”

“Does it fucking matter, Kat? They’re mine.” Something isn’t sitting right with me. Why would he want them all of a sudden?

Is there a new girlfriend he has and wants to act like a loving father? If so, I don’t fucking care. He’s too late.

“Go to hell, Theo. You’re not getting shit from me.” My hands shake as I hang up the phone.
