“I’ll fry your brain,” Ash says. Why doesn’t he try it instead of talking about it? Did he get drugged? Is that why he’s struggling?

“No you won’t,” Theo replies with confidence. “Remember, Ash, we’re the ones who trained you four. We know all your strengths and . . . all your weaknesses.”

I’m going to throw up.

The Iron Beast Pack without magic, the supernatural community knew these guys were scary—especially because of the training they had while working for the council. But now the person they worked for, the man who watched them closely, is here and unafraid of my guys.

He touches my face gently, and I’m repulsed by it, but thankfully he drops his hand. I once wanted his touch, craved it even, needed to be wanted by him. Yet he constantly gave me the cold shoulder.

“I’m going to kill you!” Ash makes an animalistic sound I’ve never heard, and I briefly look at him again. He’s trying to push against some sort of block.

“Give it up, Ash. You can’t use your powers,” Theo says it like it’s a matter of fact. “I’ve made sure of it.” Then his body goes limp.

“What the hell did you do to him?” I screech in horror as Ash’s head slumps forward to mirror Az.

“He wouldn’t have let us talk, and I was tired of his yapping.” He rolls his eyes in annoyance. “Let’s just say, he took a little longer than his brother for the drugs to kick in.” I don’t like his tone. He’s making me worry more about my guys.

My wolf has been so quiet through all this. She usually has something to say, even if it’s only to bash someone. I believe she’d have so much to say about Theo—especially since she despises him.

“Wolf.”She doesn’t respond, so I try again.“Wolf.”Still nothing. Where is she?

“If you’re trying to communicate with your wolf, you can’t.” I drag my glare back to Theo’s dark eyes. How the hell did he know that’s what I was trying to do? “No, I wasn’t reading your mind, Kat. You were just concentrating very hard.”

I stop breathing for a second. I gave him everything, my true self, and he gave me absolutely nothing. Well, except for my kids, but other than that, I don’t know anything about the man in front of me.

“We’ve given you a shot.” He points to my shoulder, and I look at it, but it looks just as smooth as ever. “It prevents you from shifting, contacting your wolf, or using your powers on me.” Fuck! I think that’s why my arm was hurting in whatever dream world I was in.

“If I was given a magic suppressant, how was your guy able to use his magic on me?” I ask.

“It prevents you from doing magic, but it doesn’t prevent anyone else from using it on you.” Double fuck!

“What did you do to Az?” My eyes flick to my other mate. I thought he’d wake up by now. I know he’s still alive because his chest moves up and down, but I hate not being able to see those blue eyes of his.

He doesn’t even glance at him, but his lip curls up in distaste. “They are both sedated. They’ll wake up when I’m ready for them to be awake.” I try not to show my slight relief. I’d rather they both be sedated then having their minds fucked with.

“Kat.” He brings my attention back to him.

“Wh-what the hell do you want, Theo? Why did you marry me? Why did you go through all this trouble to put up appearances, make me believe you were normal, that the kids and I were normal?” I hate how my words sound like I’m pleading for him to give me an answer, but I’m exhausted from his games and truly need to know.

He had someone in his possession who has the same powers as me, but they are more experienced than I will probably ever be.

“Well, now that Benji’s sister killed her,” he says with an air of annoyance. “You’ll fill her spot.”

Uh, yeah, no. That’s not fucking happening.

Again, I don’t have to speak out loud for him to know what I’m thinking. “If you don’t cooperate, I’ll kill everyone you’ve ever loved.” He spares a glance at the men slumped over behind him.

Theo will do it too. I don’t doubt that.

“I’ve been watching you since the day Krissy tracked you to one of your foster homes. I haven’t found anyone since you. I truly think you’re the last one. We ‘met’ at the diner,” he adds with air quotes to prove that this was all planned. “It didn’t take much convincing to get you to marry me. You wanted the life I could provide. Then you gave me two children I never wanted. Maybe if I would’ve known your magic was hidden the whole time then I would have wanted them if they’d only prove useful, and now I found that they are. Well, at least Ava. I don’t think . . .” he trails off before continuing. “I don’t know about Ezra yet. He’ll be a shifter for sure, but whether he gets any of your magic is still a mystery.”

“Jess proved to be quite the con artist. She made me believe that your magic was gone. She kept you from the supernatural world. I didn’t know she was a supernatural until recently. She was very good at hiding information.” He chuckles before saying, “There were a few times that you almost caught me, but I played it off, and just like always, you believed me. I figured if you didn’t know about it, you might accidentally let your magic slip.”

I look at the small indents on my finger from our wedding rings that are still imprinted into my skin. I start putting things together.

“The rings were nothing more than—”

“A tracking device,” he answers simply.
