“That’s the only reason you gave them to me? To track my location or to see if my powers sparked? You used them to keep me hostage.” I hate that it took me this long to figure this all out. There was no way for me to know, but it’s still a slap in the face. He’s just as good as Jess was at hiding information from me.

“That day when you were attacked at the bar, I told Krissy not to pursue you, but she hated you so much. She was power hungry, but she was useful at the time. She helped me find you.”

“She wanted me dead because I was a threat to her. She wanted my power for herself so that she could control you, and you knew you wouldn’t have been able to control her, so you said all these pretty words to make her believe that she could take my power.”

“Exactly,” Theo says as he grabs his phone again, answering a message.

“But why didn’t she take the other woman’s power?” The other lady with violet eyes had the same power as I did. Except for one. I believe that’s what she mentioned. Krissy could have had the ability to manipulate other supernaturals.

“Because I drained her too much. I had other—uses for her,” he replies looking at his watch.

“Did you kill Jess?” He looks back up, putting it away. I already know the answer, but I need him to confirm. I need to see his face when he answers me.

“Yes.” One word and zero remorse. “She was threatening my plans. She dug deep and found out who I was. I couldn’t risk her talking to the wrong people, now could I? She had to die.” Hearing those words coming from his mouth, I want to strip him of everything he has, his power, his control, his life. My best friend died because of him. The only friend who stuck with me from the beginning.

“Why didn’t you tell me about this world?” I almost choke up again remembering the night I saw Jess’s lifeless body on the floor.

“I was afraid that in telling you, I might spook you from manifesting your power. You were only supposed to be useful for one thing only, and that’s to give me the power I needed.” Of course it is. I shouldn’t have expected anything else.

I still don’t understand though. “Why go to this extreme to have the council at your fingertips?”

He opens his mouth to speak but then closes it as if thinking about his next words. “How is it fair that some shifters get to have power while others don’t? I want to help the other shifters,” he answers, and I would have believed him before all of this, but I know better now.

“You want to be able to have magic so that you can control the supernatural community without having to rely on anyone else for power.” He licks his lips, not denying anything I’ve said.

“You’re right. That’s why I told Krissy to kill her family, so she can gain more power, and in return, she’d give me what I was looking for.” This is partly true. I can taste his words on my tongue, and I know he’s being truthful. But—

“There’s something more to this story, something you’re leaving out on purpose. You don’t give a shit about the council; you never have and you never will. You infiltrated them for a reason.”

He chuckles darkly. “Oh, Kat. You know me too well.”No, I know nothing about you. I’m starting to wonder if anyone does. I don’t even think Krissy knew therealTheo.

“You wanted Krissy because she was able to prove that she could suck in all the witches’ power. That’s why you gave her that order and made her promises.”

“Exactly. The day you caught me sleeping with her.” I wait to see if the jealousy or the rage of that night hits, but I feel absolutely nothing. There’s nothing I want from this man. “I never meant to let you go. But I couldn’t choose your side now, could I? I needed her to keep trusting me so that she can keep looking for a way to transfer the power of the wolves’ magic to me.” And there it is, part of why he’s doing this, but again, it’s not the whole truth.

Fuck, I guess catching them in the act was a blessing. If I wasn’t under the care of the guys then he would have eventually figured out that I had the power that Jess tried to hide from him all along.

“So, Krissy meant nothing to you? Just a means to an end?” I almost feel bad for her. She thought she was helping this lunatic out, and in return she was going to get more power. She sacrificed her family and gave her life to the man standing before me, and all he was doing was using her for an endgame that never included her.

“But there’s more isn’t there?” He shows me no emotion.

“You’re not a shifter, you’re—something else.” I let the words out and exhale another wave of anxiety. He laughs and his eyes turn red. My body violently shakes, and it has nothing to do with the temperature.

This is what Ava is becoming.

I think the guys saw her eyes change color and wanted to figure this out before they told me. They’re going to get an earful from me for keeping this shit a secret. I’ll bring it up after we’ve beaten Theo and are all together as a family again.

“Your kind was wiped out of existence.” My mind wanders back to Ava’s school book.

He snarls, nothing like a wolf. His elongated claws are nothing like mine. They are pitch black and sharper than I’ve ever seen. The only place I ever saw this was in Ava’s school book, and now she’s like him.

Is my daughter going to be killed because of Theo?

Lycan. The name comes back to me.

That’s what Theo is, what Ava is. Is Ezra going to be one too?

“If Ezra doesn’t have your power, he’ll most likely have mine.” I look at him baffled, and he laughs again. “You’re just too transparent, Kat.”
