I need to school my features better.

“Ava doesn’t have your power, but she has my ability, and she has—” he trails off in thought. “Something else. I want to confirm my suspicions before I say something.” He looks at me again with a smile.

“How are you still alive if your kind was wiped out?” I wish he had been killed with the rest of them, but I’m quickly reminded that my kids wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him. I’m stuck in this situation of wishing he didn’t exist and being grateful that my kids do.

He comes and sits next to me like we’re truly a couple. How the hell does he manage to be at ease? I want to grab him and shred him to pieces, but when I’m pulled back, I’m quickly reminded that I have cuffs around my wrists.

“It’s a very long story, Kat, but I’ll give you the short version.”

Finally, it looks like he’ll answer the questions reeling in my brain. The truth will finally come out.

“I had a family before you, Kat. I had a mate and two boys.” My mouth hangs open. This is not what I was expecting.

Chapter twenty-six

Kat

Holyfuckingshit.

Never in a million years would I think those words would come out of his mouth.

Theo has a whole family we never knew about.

I’m glad I found my real family because seeing the warm smile on his face as he thinks of another woman and the kids they had together would have killed me before. This is the first genuine emotion I’ve seen out of him my whole life.

“It ate me up when you had our kids. It felt like I was neglecting my own kids with Freyja.”Freyja, he has never mentioned her name, not even in passing. This is the first I’ve heard of it. “It’s why I told you I got a vasectomy. The guilt ate me up every day.” I’d almost feel bad if he hadn’t treated me like shit and experimented on the kids. “I said things to you that I know would make you feel bad because I hated myself for replacing my mate. In all the years before I met you, I fucked other women, but I never had a relationship until you.”

He pauses for a long moment, and just when I think that’s the end of him sharing, he surprises me by starting back up again.

“We were at war. It was a gruesome battle, but we had the upper hand. The shifters wanted us out of this world, Kat. We were the ones being killed. We lived in harmony with the wolves until we were stabbed in the back. This was more than a thousand years ago.” My eyes grow huge with surprise. No wonder this guy is a master manipulator. He’s been alive longer than my mates, which is hard to believe because I thought my guys were pretty ancient. “I managed to escape before getting swallowed up in a hole.”

“What a shame,” I bite out, “that you didn’t get sucked into the hole.” But he just smiles and shakes his head.

“Your kind was hunted and killed too, and it wasn’t because of lycans, it was the shifters.” I must look shocked because he says, “Yeah the men you’ve taken a liking to.” I try to swallow, but my mouth feels parched. “The council found out about me, wanted to make sure I was never able to bring my kind back.”

“What the hell? So how were you able to join the council if they disliked your kind?” I’m going to need years of therapy to process all this information.

“Jess worked for the council for a while, but I didn’t know anything about her. She was a seer, and she was able to plant information in their heads long before I showed up. She knew you’d be sought after and took precautions that helped ease the council, too bad she couldn’t see her death,” he says with a callus chuckle.

I wish my guys were aware of this.

When I know he isn’t going to talk more, I ask, “What the fuck am I, Theo? You keep sayingmy kindlike I’m supposed to know.”

“You can manipulate other supernaturals the same way vampires manipulate humans, but you can also open a portal that my family is trapped in.” Words of danger run through my mind, reminding me of what the woman with violet eyes said.

“N-no. That can’t be right.”

I regret asking. I don’t want to hear anymore. I want to cover my ears, but the cuffs won’t let me, and they swing back down on the bed.

“This is all true, Kat. In my lifetime, I’ve been able to capture three of your kind. The first one I captured killed herself immediately after she helped me infiltrate the council. For years I roamed this world until I found another one of your kind. The council was all mine—except for Silas. I never found out how he was able to not give in to your power. He’s the only one I’ve found that can actually resist it. At first, he acted like he was enthralled and agreed to everything I said, but lately, he has led me to believe he has a plan of his own. I don’t know what it is yet, but I’m going to find out.”

I’m curious about Silas too, but I don’t let him know that.

“The girl before you was weak. I’ve never met anyone with so little power. The only thing she could do was sway people. That’s when I knew I had to find a witch to help me.”Krissy.“I figured I could take the powers of the wolves and use it for my gain, but she wasn’t smart enough to figure out how to do that. I’ve seen and read ancient books of witches doing the craziest shit, and I know this would’ve been no different.”

“Theo, what the hell is your plan?” I know he isn’t telling me the whole truth.

“If you do this wrong you could die, Kat.” He doesn’t answer my question, instead, he gives me this vague, unsettling answer.
