SomethingisupwithTheo; I just can’t pinpoint what it is. As much as I want to stay in bed with Katarina and reassure her that Theo can’t come here and take the kids, there are other threats that are harming my family.

I leave Katarina’s room with a promise of taking her out to dinner later, and I walk straight into Tyler’s room, but he’s not here. Maybe he’s still at the cabin.

I need to burn off this energy. I think about calling Tyler to spar, but I’m in no mood to get my ass kicked. So, I take my wolf out on a run instead.

Once my body is tired, I go to my room and quickly put on a fresh suit and dial Tyler’s number.

“Everything okay with Kat?” he asks, sensing my distress through our bond.

“We need to talk. Theo called her three hours ago. Meet me in my office. I’ll tell you about it,” I say as I walk downstairs.

“I’m on my way,” he replies before hanging up.

I go to my desk and pull out a drawer full of paperwork and background checks on Theo. Tyler gave me a full file on him when we were tasked to keep Kat safe. The first time I read through the papers, I was expecting him to be clean, but now, I’m realizing he’s way too perfect.

My focus was on Katarina at the time, and because she was our main priority, I may have skimmed over some details about her ex and their kids.

Tyler bursts through the door without knocking. “What’s going on, Ash?” He’s ready for a fight, and I haven’t seen him this wired in a long time.

My wolf’s head pokes out of his cave.“Except when—”

“Not a word.”I stop my wolf from finishing that sentence. It was a fluke anyhow. I could’ve taken him down.

“I’ll tell you when I call the others. I need you to check on Theo’s family. Dig up everything you have on him. His story is not adding up.”

“I fucking knew it,” he responds. “I never leave anything to chance.” He’d talked to me about wanting to check further into Theo, but I stopped him, thinking he was being too paranoid. Our only focus at the time was getting Katarina to our property. “I’m going to get dressed and then I’ll be right back.” I’m just now realizing he looks sweaty. I should have known he went to the gym.

He closes the door behind him as he leaves.

We haven’t been able to use our link in so long that I’ve forgotten we have it now. This will be my first time trying it since we got our powers back. I’m afraid to use it.

“Why?”my wolf questions.

“I don’t know. Maybe because I’m afraid that it still won’t work. Or I’m afraid that it will work and we’ll lose it again.”This was our bond. Our right as a pack. And the thought that it could be taken away again terrifies me.

“Krissy was probably the only witch that was able to do that. The only reason she was able to take it from us was because she stole her ancestors’ magic,”my wolf tries to reassure me.

I sigh.“You’re right.”

“I know I am.”Cocky wolf.

With a deep breath, I mentally call for them.“Az, Benji, come down to the office. I’ve got some news to share with you.”

“I’ve missed this,”Benji says in a chipper voice inside my head.

“You better not be yapping through our link now that we have it back,”Az responds to Benji.

I would normally taunt Az for this, but I’m so focused on the task at hand that I let it go.

Five minutes later, both Az and Benji attempt to stride into my office at the same time, shoulder checking each other at the entrance as they both try to squeeze through the threshold.

“Hey, it’s Kat,” Az says, looking over his shoulder down the empty hallway. Benji’s head jerks back to see around Az, but he’s already pushing Benji out of his way.

“You asshole,” Benji says as he realizes it was a trick to distract him. Az only chuckles. They take up the two chairs right across from me.

“You couldn’t tell us through our link?” Az asks, already bored and twirling his knife. He senses my unease, and he’s being cautious.
