I don’t know if I’ll make it out of this alive, but I know one thing for sure: I’m taking Theo down with me. I can’t let myself open the portal. If there was a reason for it to be closed then whatever is on the other side shouldn’t be let out.

Someone grabs my wrists and holds them together, binding them behind my back. I follow his instructions, trying to ignore the sharp pain that makes it hard to wiggle my fingers. I see a big needle heading for my shoulder, and as soon as it punctures my skin, my body grows cold.

They’re numbing my power.

We walk down the porch stairs with the dark sky starting to lighten. A van is waiting for me ominously in the distance.

I look to my right and stumble back a step, but I’m pushed forward.

“Mom!” Ava shouts before she’s shoved into the vehicle. I push myself toward the group of people surrounding me, but it’s no use. They’re not letting me go anywhere. This wasn’t part of the deal. If I agreed to go with them, they were going to stop hurting my guys and leave my family peacefully.

I try to find Ezra in the crowd, but it doesn’t look like they have him. I don’t see him anywhere, but I’m not sure if that’s a good thing. What if he fought back like the guys? What if he’s hurt, or what if he’s—No. I can’t think like that!

“Let my daughter go!” I howl, but no one responds, and instead I am pushed forward roughly.

The ride to wherever we’re going is silent. I have a bag over my head, so I try to memorize the movements, but it’s no use. There were too many turns, and I think it was done on purpose.

“You know he’s a werewolf, right?” I try to see if anyone can reason with him, but they all laugh it off. “He is. He’s playing all of you guys. He’s trying to get me to open the portal.”

More laughter.

That’s when I decide to give up and keep my mouth shut. The other violet voyager did a great job in making them believe what Theo wanted them to.

The vehicle finally stops. They rip the cover from my face and I gasp, the crisp night air filling my lungs. I blink against the glare of the full moon overhead. We’re surrounded by dense forest, the smell of pine and wet earth is strong.

I’m pushed toward a four-wheeler, a really nice Polaris.

“So, I’m guessing this isn’t our stop,”my wolf groans.

“I guess not,”is the only response I have for her.

“Get on,” one of my masked captors orders. Their dark sunglasses give no glimpse of their eyes, eliminating any chance of swaying them.

Before I can react and try to escape, a sharp pain stabs my neck. The tranquilizer spreads through my veins, the forest spinning away as darkness consumes my vision. My body goes limp, slumping forward. Strong arms catch me, draping me over the four-wheeler seat like a rag doll. My head bounces with each bump and jolt as we set off again.

The four-wheeler kicks up choking clouds of dust that sting my eyes and coat my lips with grit. I try to lift my head, to call out, but the sedative still floods my system, leaving me limp and mute. I can do nothing except watch the spinning earth, completely powerless.

Sometime later, I open my eyes to see the ground racing by below, my limbs dangling weakly. I drift back to semi-consciousness as I’m dragged down a dirt path. I notice how pitch black it is away from the city. The moon overhead provides the only illumination. My weakened muscles barely respond, but I manage to summon my wolf vision. The path leaps into clarity, each tree and leaf vivid to my enhanced eyes. Though the sedative still courses through me, at least I can now see clearly through the eerie darkness that surrounds me. For now, all I can do is stumble along as my captors pull me deeper into the shadows.

The men holding my arms walk me to the center of a small clearing surrounded by tall trees. There are chairs lined up in a circle around us.

“This is where we’re meeting the council?” I ask, knowing full well that this was not for the council at all. This is for Theo. He just made everyone believe it was. He’s good that way, making people believe him.

I honestly thought it would be in an elaborate building.

As if I summoned them, a group of people started to show up. They all wear sunglasses so I can’t look at their eyes directly. At first, they seem to materialize directly from the dark forest. But as more join the circle, my eyes catch on shapes lurking deeper among the trees. Partly obscured by brush is a group of ATVs. That explains the sudden gathering. The vehicles allowed swift, quiet transport through the woods.

“So it is true, she does have violet eyes,” says a male standing right in front of me. I want to shift uncomfortably, but my wolf doesn’t let me.

“I thought we got rid of all of them,” a lady says from behind me.

“I’m sorry you had to live with that,” another lady with pointed ears voices, looking at me with disgust. She has to be Fae. I’ve read in the kids’ school books that Fae are exceptionally beautiful but equally cruel. The sneer on her delicate face gives her away—and the man next to her as well.

I look at the rest of the council members, but Silas is nowhere to be found. I wonder if they killed him because he lied to them about me.

“I don’t think so. He’s a smart man,”my wolf replies, and I breathe in relief when I hear her in my mind. My wolf wasn’t lost when they numbed my powers, and she’s right, Silas isn’t one to be captured, and if by the off chance he was, he wouldn’t have gone down easily. All these people would’ve had some type of injury. As it stands right now, everyone looks perfect and nothing seems out of place.
