“Don’t you see, Theo? She’s the mate to the Iron Beast Pack. If we don’t kill her then they’ll be too powerful to stop, and they’ll rule over the wolves. Do you really want that, Theo?” The shifter’s eyes gaze toward me, and I shift uneasily under their scrutiny. “We have to do it now before they find her and destroy us all.”

“She’s not their mate, theirmatedied,” Theo says with confidence.

I stand very still, trying not to make a move. I think I’ve forgotten how to breathe by how tightly I’m holding onto my breath.

I’m shocked that he didn’t guess that part. He really did think the woman he had locked up was their mate. Explains why Zoe was so certain that I wasn’t their mate. I can’t really fault her for that one, after all, she was locked up because of Theo, and she didn’t know any better. Theo was her only source of information.

Please don’t ask me, please don’t ask me.I repeat it over and over hoping he moves on.

Theo faces me again, shit. He’s frowning now. “Kat,” I hate the way he says my name. “Is this true?” he asks, trying to confirm what the shifter voiced.

There’s no point in lying, he’ll see right through it.

“Yes.” As soon as those words come out of my lips, I try to see if I can reach my mates, but our mind link is still not there.

As if it doesn’t faze him, he turns back to the council. “Bring Ava out.”

My body trembles in fear. “Theo, please,” I whisper, hating that I have to plead with him not to harm our daughter, but I’d do anything to protect her. “Leave her out of this.” He’s still staring out into the open. “She doesn’t havemymagic.” He turns to me then and gives me a wide smile, showing me his bright white teeth.

He looks behind him and nods, then he looks at me again. “While Krissy’s magic was looking for a host, it found Ava to attach itself to.”

Shit.

Chapter thirty

Tyler

It’sbeenhourssincethe council members took Kat and Ava. Although our connection is temporarily numb, I know that she hasn’t been killed. I only know this because we would feel the pain in our hearts of our missing soulmate.

I’m not sure where they took her. They covered their scent so we can’t track them, and it’s a struggle not to tear this place down in anger. The old Tyler is slowly creeping up, and I’m fine with it. I need to be ruthless.

The house is too quiet.

Once the trucks left, the rest of the guards were here for an hour before they let us all go. While we were under the dreamscape they shot us with sedatives to numb our power and connection. We were helpless for a few hours. There’s no doubt in my mind about who took them and why.

As soon as we can, we check on Ezra in his room. He’s devastated and scared for both his sister and his mom. I only let Lucas inside the room with him. They were playing video games last time I checked, but it’s a poor distraction for everything that’s going on..

I have Matt watching the house. I don’t want anyone to take him too.

Ryder, Cash, Zay, and Bryson busted inside the door looking for Ava as soon as the guards left. I asked them how they knew something happened since the council’s tac team is silent. They said because they were woken up by a feeling of panic, they knew something had happened to Ava. I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but that’s their story and they’re sticking to it.

I sent them home two hours ago. I told them they needed to get some rest. I glance at my brothers, who look just as exhausted as I feel, but there’s no way we’ll rest. I bet money that Ryder, Cash, Zay, and Bryson never made it home to rest either. They’re probably outside keeping their distance, staring at the house, and waiting for our next move.

A knock on the door startles me from my thoughts. None of us make the effort to get up to see who’s on the other side. If it’s a threat, they probably wouldn’t have been knocking anyhow. The council tac team left a long time ago, and they may come back to kill us, but not today. Their job here is done for now. My stomach revolts. I can’t believe I used to work for them.

Footsteps approach. “Gentlemen.” Our heads snap up to see Silas standing there looking very suspicious.

Az is the first one to get up and get in his face. “Where the fuck is she?” Az’s voice is broken, but he manages to sound menacing, nonetheless.

“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t tear your head off?” Ash says, getting closer to Silas but still keeping a distance.

“Because I know where she is.” We collectively growl at his response.

“I know we can’t kill a council member, but as of now, I don’t give a fuck about the council coming after me. Let them all come,” Benji says as I stand from the couch and give our intruder my full attention.

Silas laughs, which makes Benji angrier. “How about I give you something, Benji, something to show that I’m not here to harm any of you,” he says with open arms, trying to look non-threatening.

Before we can comprehend his words, he shouts, “Come on in.”
