We stare at the entryway and—

“Zoe,” Benji stutters in disbelief. “Is it really you?” she walks in looking around the house before her eyes land on her brother.

“Hey big brother.” Benji moves past me and Silas and grabs his sister, hugging her tightly.

“Why?” Benji asks in a broken and hollow voice.

“She deserves to live her life. I didn’t know that the place existed until very recently. Tyler needed the location of the woman, and so I gave it to him knowing you’d free those kids.” I really don’t know Silas’s angle, but he can’t be trusted. Silas always has his own agenda. I just don’t know what it is. When we don’t respond, he continues. “I didn’t take her.” When the four of us glare at him he says, “I promise.” You never know what you’re going to get with Silas.

“Where is she?” Az asks, still staring at Zoe like she’s going to go crazy and kill us all. Benji notices and scowls at Az. When this is over, we need to all sit down and have a long conversation with Zoe.

“You remember the night Kat killed Krissy?” We nod our heads. “There was smoke that came out of Krissy along with her powers looking for a host.”

“Where are you going with this, Silas?” I ask in confusion. I’m trying to figure out if any of his bullshit will help us find Kat.

“Well, Krissy’s power was looking for a host, and as I suspected, it latched onto Ava.” I gasp. Fuck! “Not only that, but the black shadow that came out of Krissy, well that’s a shadow that belongs to the other side.”

“Stop fucking with us, Silas,” Az growls. “If you’re not going to tell us where Kat is then fucking leave before I decide to bleed you to death.”

“Hang on, Az. Listen to my story first. That shadow belongs to the portal where the werewolves were locked up. Theo is making Kat open the portal, which means more shadows will come out.”

“What was the black smoke?” I ask, remembering it came out of nowhere. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I don’t know what it is, but I have a feeling it’s nothing good.

“Death,” Silas replies.

Chapter thirty-one

Ash

ItenseatSilas’swords. The thought of the black smoke and how it distorted our vision worries me. I remember switching to my wolf vision and still couldn’t see anything in front of me.

“The black smoke was a fail-safe for Theo. If Krissy was dying, she was to release that power. That power was attached to Theo. It came out when the portal opened. I think,” he says hesitantly. “It has a mind of its own, but I’m not too sure.” He turns away from us briefly before his eyes land on me. I can’t tell if he’s lying. “Krissy had that shadow locked in place. I told her to do it to have leverage against Theo. Now the shadow is back and has merged with Theo. They’ve become unstoppable now that the foreign object is attached to him. They both have a goal, and that’s to open the portal to their world. That’s why we need to make sure Kat doesn’t open the portal and let more of those shadow things come to this world. I’ve seen what that small black smoke can do, and I don’t want to see what will happen if a big wave shows up.”

I’m trying to wrap my head around all the information Silas is giving us.

“Theo was angry that I found Smart Technologies,” Silas continues. “And even more furious I gave you guys the location of his facility. As revenge, he found one of my homes which happened to be the one with the book, the only book that belonged to the violet voyagers also known as Kat’s kind. This means she can open the portal if she reads the spell that only her kind can say out loud. Theo spent centuries looking for it, but I kept it hidden. I never thought he’d find my place. If I knew he’d use children to harvest the power he needed to create the portal, I would’ve stopped it immediately.”

“Why are you giving us all this information?” Az asks, holding tightly to his knife. I think Az is planning on throwing it as Silas, but it won’t come near him. Silas is too quick.

“Isn’t it obvious?” He looks at each of us. “I don’t want those black shadows in this world.” This is the first time I’ve ever seen fear in his eyes, but it’s gone quickly.

“What do y’all think?”I ask my brothers through our mind link.

“I think this is all fucking crazy, but I don’t think he’s lying about this,”Benji says.

“He’s not lying, but I know Silas has his own agenda. What it is, I have no fucking clue,”Tyler replies clenching and unclenching his fists.

“Fuck. I can’t kill him because I believe him.”Az keeps his eyes on Silas, but Silas isn’t threatened by any of us.

“I think he does have his own agenda but, as of now, I can’t seem to care because we need him to find Kat and Ava,”I relay my thoughts to them.

“If you guys are done communicating, let’s get the fuck out of here and find your mate and your daughter,” Silas says with urgency. He came in here as if he had all the time in the world, but he’s just as worried as the rest of us.

Silas looks up at the stairs, and I follow his line of sight but find nothing. This guy is fucking weird, but the man knows too much about things he shouldn’t. Maybe one day I’ll hold him with my claws and see if he’ll spill his secrets. I doubt he’ll let me get that close to him, but it’s worth a try.

Tyler grabs his phone from his pocket, talking to a beta. Within minutes we hear a van pulling up.

“Zoe, let me show you to your room,” Benji tells his sister, guiding her up the stairs.
