We watch them leave, and my shoulders relax when he takes her to the third floor. I look at Az and Tyler, and they seem just as relieved as I do.

“Tyler—” I start.

“Already messaged Carter,” Tyler answers, his fingers tapping rapidly at his phone. I want someone to keep guard. I don’t trust her yet.

When we hear the bedroom door close, we each sprint to our rooms to grab our tac gear. Benji and I make it back to the bottom at the same time, and Az is already down here with Tyler.

Silas sits waiting on the couch, eyes glued to his phone screen. At our rushed appearance, he pockets his phone and stands smoothly.

“Let’s go,” Silas says, already striding for the front door. We scramble to follow behind him.

Outside, Andrew holds the back door of the idling SUV open for us. Once we’re settled in our seats, he slams it shut and hops into the driver’s side as Carter takes shotgun. The engine revs, and we peel away.

Our betas got our guards together and are following behind us in a caravan of vehicles.

After two hours trekking through the forest, we finally stop. None of us talked the whole way. I glance over at Silas. He looks relaxed, but there is a tightness in the corner of his eyes.

He says he wants to help, and maybe he does, but I know there’s something more going on with this. He’s got his own reasons, and he isn’t sharing any of them.

Once we get out of the van, there are ATVs waiting for us. I thought this was it, I thought we were here. I didn’t think we had to travel more. I don’t let the disappointment show. I’m anxious to see my mate to make sure she’s unharmed. If they’ve hurt Ava or Katarina in any way, they’re going to regret what they’ve done. We will destroy each and every single person there.

“Get on,” Silas says.

My brothers and I take one of the ATVs, and Silas and Andrew take the other. Az takes the driver’s seat, and I take the back with Benji. I hear Tyler and Az bickering, but I pay them no mind. They’ll take care of their own shit. Eventually Az moves and Tyler gets in the driver’s seat.

“Have the others shift into wolves and follow us.” They don’t need to be told twice. They shed their clothes and shift.

The air gets thicker the longer we drive, and my nerves get the best of me. I haven’t had this feeling since I was a kid. I try to contain my emotions before I accidentally shift and the beast takes over, destroying everything in its path. As it is, he’s pacing back and forth in my head.

I look over at Benji, knowing he has a lot on his mind with his sister showing up, but I need to know I can trust him to be here with us.

“My mind is focused, Ash,”he says angrily through our mind link. His eyes shift to mine, and I only nod once.

Silas’s ATV finally stops, and Tyler pulls up alongside him.

“Katarina.”I can finally sense her, but she isn’t answering.“Katarina,”I say again, this time more anxiously. I don’t have a good feeling. If your mind connection is open again, this means—Oh no.

The ground shakes violently. My brothers and I look at each other with wide eyes.

“We’re too late,” Silas says, that’s when a thick black fog surrounds us.

Chapter thirty-two

Kat

AvahasallofKrissy’s magic. I look at my daughter in shock, but her eyes are cast down.

“This worked out better than I hoped,” Theo says with glee.

“Your daughter has Krissy’s magic? But how? When did she die? And why weren’t we made aware of this?” one of the human-looking supernaturals asks. He has a long black tail that swings back and forth, but he could easily pass for human.

“Well Darragh,” Theo begins dramatically. “Kat here killed her days ago.” There’s a collective gasp among the members.

“Even more reason to terminate Kat now. If she’s able to kill someone as powerful as Krissy then we should get rid of her. She’s a threat to us.” The angel’s shapely white curls are crowned by a halo that casts a soft glow across her ageless features. Despite her beauty, her full lips are pursed in disdain. Her delicate brows arch over her eyes with a narrowed contempt. She holds her flowing wings arched up in a gesture of authority. The feathers rustle with glittering white crystals as she speaks.

Ava looks at me fearfully as the guards take slow, pointed steps toward me, and it breaks my heart that I can’t reassure her. I want to tell her that we’ll both be okay. I still have The Kiss of Death strapped to my leg beneath my nightgown. We have a chance to survive this, but I stay silent, begging her with my eyes to trust me.

As the two guards get closer, I hunker down, reaching beneath my skirt to feel for my weapon, but before I can rip the blade free from its holder, a shadow steps right in front of me and swallows the guards whole, leaving nothing behind.
