I guess I could’ve, but I’m not used to it yet. “No,” I say instead.

“So what’s the news?” Benji asks, moving to get comfortable.

“We’re waiting for Tyler.” As soon as the words leave my lips, Tyler steps in wearing a fresh pair of sweats and a T-shirt.

“We’re all here,” Tyler says as he leans against the wall.

“Theo called Katarina this morning.”

They all look stunned, and if this situation wasn’t so serious, I’d laugh at their shocked faces. Their surprise morphs into anger, and in an instant, they are ready to brawl.

“What the fuck!” they all shout at the same time.

Az’s hatred turns into a sinister smile like he’s ready to play. That’s the mode I need him in right now.

“Az, go check on hisfamilyand take reinforcements. I don’t have a good feeling about this.”

“We need to make her our alpha female of the pack—our Luna—as soon as possible. We’re more vulnerable when we’re not presenting as a unit when it’s known that she’s our mate. Have you been able to talk to her about it yet?” Benji asks hopefully.

I shake my head. “Not yet. She was too tired to discuss anything last night. I’m going to take her out to dinner. I’ll tell her then.”

“You better, Ash. We don’t have the time to wait.” Tyler leans his head against the wall like he’s building up a plan in his mind. I won’t ask him because I won’t understand his gibberish talk about hacking and computers.

“Ash, you need to tell her by the end of the week. We’ve waited a long time.” Benji is right. It bothers me that I didn’t catch on that Emma was never our mate. I should’ve known that Emma wasn’t it by the way Katarina commanded my attention.

“We need to talk about Ava,” Az interrupts. Our heads move in his direction.

“Is she okay?” I ask immediately.

“She was fine when Benji and I left the cabin early this morning,” he says as he looks contemplative on how to say the words next.

“She’s not . . .” Az looks at each of us trying to figure out how to say it. “I mean I don’t think she’s like her mom.”

“So she doesn’t have violet eyes? Maybe that’s why she didn’t shift?” Tyler asks as Benji pulls out a red apple and bites into it, making a loud crunch.

He shrugs when we all look over at him. “What? I’m hungry.”

“I don’t know how to explain it. Her eyes were different from ours, and her talons were darker and sharper.”

“Fuck,” I say, slumping back in my chair.

Benji takes another bite. “Maybe she can’t shift at all.”

“Even if she can’t, we won’t kick her out of this pack.” Packs are known to kick you out if you can’t shift. We’ve made it known that we run our pack differently.

“We’ll work it out with her. When she’s better, we can ask Ava if she’d like to work on shifting, and if it doesn’t happen, she doesn’t have to worry.”

“Isn’t it a weird coincidence that as soon as her gift is activated, her father calls.” Tyler rubs his chin in thought.

“How would he know about Ava’s transition?” Benji asks, taking the last bite of his apple.

“Yeah that’s the real question,” Az says looking at his phone.

“I’ll go over the files. There are pages I have questions about,” Tyler says as he walks back to the door.

“I have the address of Theo’s parents. I’ll pay them a visit,” Az says as he gets up from the chair.

They both leave my office.
