A stampede of . . . something is coming out of the hole. I can’t see what it is, but I know it’s nothing good.

“Katarina,”Ash yells through our mind link.“Katarina,”he shouts again, but my mind is too occupied trying to get to my daughter.

The wind is blowing harder and faster. The ground underneath me rumbles as foreign steps jump out of the portal.

“Ava!” I keep yelling, but I can’t move. I crouch down looking for the book I dropped. I’m not sure how I’ll be able to read the spell to open the portal, but I’ll have to try. I get on my knees, hoping and praying that whatever hoard is coming out of the void doesn’t step on me.

It’s slow moving since the wind passing by me is so harsh. I crawl in the direction I think I’ve dropped it. I feel like Velma when she drops her glasses and is too blind to find them.

A minute later, my hand touches the book, I try to pick it up but can’t. I feel around only to find someone’s foot on top of the book, keeping me from picking it up. I look up and can only see red eyes. I stifle my scream. I don’t know if it’s Theo or another lycan.

It picks me up from my throat, and my feet no longer touch the ground. I try to kick the body, but the lycan’s arms are too long for me to do much damage.

“You’re not closing the portal, Kat,” Theo growls. How the hell can he see through the darkness surrounding us? “Not until every last lycan is back where they belong.”

“Theo,” a gravelly voice sounds from behind him. I flick my eyes toward the voice only to see red eyes. “It’s good to be back.”

“Beau, it’s nice to have you back. I need you to take some of the lycans down there.” His body moves slightly, and I think Theo is pointing in the direction he wants them to go. “I have no doubt her mates are coming back for her and Ava. They’re wolves, you can kill them all.”

“Finally, payback,” Beau grumbles and leaves me alone with Theo once again.

“We’re getting our revenge, Kat. We’re going to kill every last one of your kind,” Theo says, squeezing just a little bit tighter before we’re both knocked over.

Theo snarls, “Ava!”

“I can’t let that happen, Dad. I’m fated to four wolves.”

“Impossible,” he snaps back with a long howl. “Our nature won’t allow wolves and lycans to be together.”

“It’s true, Dad, and I can’t let you kill them.” I can’t even process the words Ava said, but I tuck them away for a later discussion with my wolf.

Speaking of my wolf. With the tranquilizer gone from my system and my powers pulsing through me, why hasn’t she come out?

“Oh I’ve been out. I’m just trying to figure out how the hell we’re going to close the fucking portal,”she responds.

I scramble wildly along the ground to find the fallen book.

“Here you go, Mom.” Ava shoves the book into my hands. “I’ll tell you the words and you can repeat them.”

“Ava no! If you speak those words, you’ll die. Why do you think Krissy never did it? You don’t have my power. Those words will destroy you.” I can’t let that happen.

“So how the hell are you supposed to close it if I can’t say the words and you can’t see them?”

Theo crackles. “The only way to close the portal is from the other side.”

My heart drops.

“How many shadows have come out?” Theo asks someone.

“Five.”

One is too many. I don’t want to think about what five would do.

“I don’t think we should let that many out. We won’t be able to control them.”

“My daughter can,” Theo replies.

Theo goes down with a loud grunt. “Ava can you see?” Az asks as he fights Theo. I can’t see anything, but I can hear all the grunts the men are making.
