As soon as I emerge on the side of the void, the suffocating black smoke dissipates. The darkness plaguing my vision evaporates, sight fully returning now that I’m through the portal.

I look around this familiar yet alien place. It’s a wasteland, with gray dirt and crumbling stone ruins. Creatures and lycans stampede past me trying to reach the portal.

With my vision cleared of the shadow, I can finally see the full chaos and desperation. The revealed carnage is almost too much, but at least the return of my senses lets me fully take in the situation.

“We have to do it now!”The urgency in my wolf’s voice startles me.

I scramble through the book, looking for the familiar page Theo gave me. I extend my claws and slice Julian’s neck, spreading the blood as I saw the hunters doing and soon after I start reading the words.

My head pounds as the guys try to communicate with me. I know my mates have a feeling I’m about to do something dangerous.

As I say the words, black shadows swarm around me. They’re blowing harder and faster than the air on the other side.

The shadows laugh at my distress. “We ate your kind. That’s when the violet voyagers found the new world and made it their home. Only a handful survived and made it to the other side, but it looks like they’re nearly all dead,” the shadow says as it gets closer to me.

“Kat!” Fucking Ryder! What the hell is he doing here? “We’re coming to help you,” he shouts.

Oh no! I tilt my head up, smelling the air. They’re all here.

There is fighting on the other side of the black shadows. I watch with wide eyes as the shadows take a more solid form. There are three of them and five of us. Two of them fight the figures except Cash, who’s taking on one of them by himself.

Cash glances at me. “Just read it, Kat!” he shouts as he struggles with the shadow.

As I recite the last of the words, I watch as the portal begins to close. The black shadow has backed up momentarily as if shocked that it’s closing.

I use that opportunity to shout “Run!” As I start running toward the portal. My body thrums knowing that if I miss the portal, I’ll be stuck here forever. I get knocked down and the book flies. There’s no time for me to grab it, I pick myself up and continue to sprint.

Their footsteps are right behind me.

“We’re almost there!” I yell out. “We’re going to make it to the other side.”

I don’t stop no matter how exhausted my body is. Finally, I jump and make it to the other side of the portal, landing on the ground.

I look behind me, and just as the four of them extend their legs, they’re engulfed by the black shadows and the portal closes, leaving Ryder, Bryson, Zay, and Cash on the other side with no way of opening the portal back up.

Chapter thirty-three

Az

EverythingissilentbesidesAva’s cries and screams. The shadows have lifted, and we can finally see the gore, limbs, and the blood staining the forest.

The lycans watch us warily and with so much loathing. They want to destroy us, even if we’re not the ones who locked them on the other side of the portal.

The lycans are ruthless fucking beasts, but so are we. They’re not built like us, and we’re not built like them. It took our guys two to one to fight them. They had the advantage of being able to see us when we couldn’t see them, but they lost more than we did. I just hope Theo was among the dead lycans. I almost had him but he ran away from me.

My pack stands on the opposite side. How we manage to get on opposite sides before the darkness lifted is beyond me, but I’m glad we are because my focus is on Ava and Kat and not on fighting. As much as I like blood, I need to make sure my mate and Ava are okay.

Kat is in the center of the clearing between the lycans and the wolves. She’s crouched on the floor, staring in horror as the portal closes, leaving the kids on the other side.

I’m too stunned to move. This hasn’t happened to me in a very long time. Usually I’d be focused on bloodshed, but nearly losing my mate and losing the kids has diverted my attention to making sure my family’s well-being is okay.

Wait, where the fuck did Silas go?

Ava tries to claw her way from Ash’s grip, but he won’t let her go. He’s holding her waist tightly. She’s still in lycan form and very strong. Ash tries to whisper in her ear, but she’s having none of it.

If those four are really her mates, which I believe they are, her heart has just shattered into a million pieces. I don’t know if she’ll ever be able to recover from the loss of her mates. I know I couldn’t live without Kat; she’s my whole world.

Kat gets up from the ground with tears running down her flushed cheeks. She looks around at both sides until she spots her daughter. That’s when the lycans start to back away.
