We let them leave for now.

“No!” Ava screams as Ash guides her into her mother’s arms. She’s trying to push Kat away, so Kat holds on to her tighter. She still manages to get out of her mom’s grip, but Benji grabs her before she runs off.

Ava pounds against him, kicking and screaming until she finally sags against him crying. My heart breaks for her. The threat is gone but not without consequences.

Ava will never be the same after this.

“Open it, Mom!” she wails. Her pain is raw.

“I can’t, Ava, I’m so sorry.” Kat goes down on her knees with her head hung low. I’m immediately there by her side, trying to get her to stand up. She leans against me, and I hold onto her. “The book is on the other side, and the spell was so complex, I don’t remember it. I would’ve happily sacrificed someone, but the problem is the spell, I don’t—” she sighs heavily, “I don’t remember.”

The lycans have disappeared. My enhanced vision picks up subtle movements in the shadows. The lycans haven’t fled. The five inky black shadows still swirling around us must be their doing, concealing them from view.

“No . . . no this can’t be happening,” Ava chants over and over again in pain and defeat.

“Theo, show yourself!” Kat screams as she looks around the forest.

There’s nothing.

“Theo!” Kat calls out angrier this time.

“Love,” Ash whispers in her ear gently. “I think he’s gone. Disappeared with the rest of them. We’ll find him, I promise you.”

Kat laughs, there’s a hollow sound to it that I don’t like.

“No, he’s still here,” she replies, scanning the trees with her violet eyes.

“Everyone is gone but us.” Tyler is now in front of Kat while Ash is on the opposite side of me.

Her shoulders are tense. I move my fingers, massaging her, hopefully getting her to relax a bit. She reaches back, putting her hands in my pockets before pulling them out and walking off. I drop my hands, missing the feel of my mate.

She looks down at the floor as if she can spot his distinct footprints. She can’t though, there are too many. Still, she looks down and follows them out into the heavy forest leaving the clearing.

“We should get going,” I say gently, following behind her.

“No. Not until I kill Theo.” She looks at Benji, still holding Ava. “Have someone take her home.” Benji nods. Then her words are barely a whisper. “I don’t want her to see me kill her father.”

How I wished at this moment it was Theo stuck on the other side instead of Ryder, Bryson, Zay, and Cash. My brothers and I will never forgive ourselves for not protecting them. I look over at Ava. I don’t think she’ll ever forgive us either.

All the guards along with Andrew and Carter leave us, taking Ava with them. It’s now only my brothers, Kat and Joseph.

“Kat,” Tyler tries again, but she silences him with one look and he backs away reluctantly to give her space. After thirty minutes, we continue to stand in the middle of this carnage, our group long gone.

“Come out, Theo.” Her voice is exhausted, but she’s so sure that he’s hiding. My senses don’t tell me he’s here, but I won’t dare go against my mate. She’s been through a lot today.

Three huge lycans come out of the trees. Their red eyes glare at us and a shadow stands behind them. I quickly run to Kat’s side and protect her, but I’m pushed by a strong set of hands and fly into the base of a tree.

I stand up but stumble. I got hit pretty hard and the world won’t stop spinning.

Chapter thirty-four

Kat

Iknewhewashiding somewhere. I knew the stupid dark shadows were cloaking him. Theo wouldn’t have left without trying to kill us.

He wants us dead.

I’m surrounded. I’m staring at the three in front of me, but my eyes are solely focused on Theo in the middle.
