“Stand back and go with the others. I should be done here soon,” Theo says as he grabs my neck. “She’s mine.”

The black shadow dissipates, and I see Theo’s angry red eyes, bloody nose, and his body that’s about to swell up.

I know my guys are still trying to fight the lycans, but it’s not like I can yell out and ask for help.

He’s cutting off my air supply, making it harder to breathe. I start to get light headed, but I still have one more thing up my sleeve.

He’s too focused on my face to notice what I’m doing with the rest of my body. I feel for Az’s knife, the one I took from him earlier. I hope he’s not looking for it, and I hope he doesn’t need it.

I find the hilt of the knife, and before I can plan this further, I shove it in his eye the same way I did with Dan the first night I was turned into a wolf. But this time, I’m not running away—not anymore. I’m going to see this through.

He stumbles loudly with a screeching growl that has my body shivering at the tone.

“You’ll pay for this, Kat,” he says, still not letting me go.

His claws puncture holes on the side of my neck. Everything that’s happening feels slow like there’s a movie playing right in front of my eyes.

I’m going to die, I think to myself. The least I can do is bring him down with me.

My body begins to tremble with the last bit of adrenaline I have left. Before he can pull Az’s knife out of his eye, I grab it and stab the other one. He lets me go, gripping his eyes with both hands, stumbling through the forest and growling loudly. I just hope that the shadow doesn’t come back. I have no energy to stand on two legs, when he lets me go, I fall hard on the ground again.

“You fucking bitch!” he yells out, but it sounds so far away.

My claws come out, and I drag my heavy body to his. I’m trying to keep up with him as he edges backward. I need to crawl faster to get to him, but my body is giving out.

He stumbles over a tree stump, and this is my chance to end him, but now I just want to lay here and never get up.

A pool of blood surrounds me, and I can’t tell if it’s his or mine. I’m starting to see black spots.

“Six more feet,” I chant to try and motivate myself to keep going; that’s all I need to get to him. With the little strength I can muster, I hold onto Az’s blade and continue to crawl to him.

I kneel next to him. “Goodbye Theo,” I say as I stab the blade into his chest over and over until everything turns black.

I wake up with my body draped over a man’s lap, the smell of lavender and leather wrapping around me like a familiar, warm blanket. My body aches all over, and when I open my eyes, the ground rushes beneath us, dirt clouding around my face and making me cough. I whimper as we hit something on the ground, whoever is driving the ATV is slamming hard on the pedal.

Az growls something unintelligible, or maybe it just sounds that way to me. Amara’s soft voice is next to me. When did she show up? She’s sitting next to Az.

“We don’t know how long the spell will keep the shadows at bay, it’s best if we get the fuck outta here before it breaks.” Amara’s voice quivers in fear.

The next thing I know, I’m waking up in my bed.

My body is sore. “You’re awake!” I look over at Benji with relief in his eyes. He’s leaning against my dresser.

“Wh—What happened?” I ask, my voice rough. “And what day is it?”

“You lost a lot of fucking blood, Kat,” Az says as he walks into the room. “We almost lost you.” I’m actually surprised to be alive. I didn’t think I’d make it. “We only just got here three hours ago.”

“Where’s Ava and Ezra?” I ask instead, trying to forget everything that’s happened to me.

“They’re in their rooms waiting for you,” Tyler says, standing by the door and assessing my injuries, which I’m sure he already did when I passed out.

“And—” I’m almost afraid to speak his name aloud because I’m afraid if I do, it’ll somehow summon him.

“He’s dead,” Az says as he sits on the right side of my bed. My body relaxes as tears begin to fall freely.

I’m joyous but also exhausted. I shift uncomfortably on my bed, wondering what my kids are going to think.

“It’ll be about a week until you’re fully recovered. Your body is spent and needs to rest,” Ash says as he sits on the other side of my bed.
