After Ava walks the stage and the ceremony has ended, she comes to find us. Benji lifts her up and twirls her around before he gently puts her down. She laughs and smiles as we congratulate her, but the pain is still there; she just knows how to hide it better and blend in with the crowd.

I haven’t seen Silas in a long time, and lately, I’ve kept replaying the conversation with Silas over and over in my head. It’s starting to make sense now as I look into Ava’s eyes.

“Are you ready for college?” Tyler asks her. She’s going to be going to the same college Tyler attended, Mystic Shadow Academy. From what the guys tell me, there was a time when only the elite of the supernatural communities attended college. Times have changed, and though they let other students in, the elite families still have priority in enrollment.

Normally Ava’s family would give her an easy in, but because she’s lycan, we really had to convince the Dean that she wouldn’t do anything to harm the other students and staff. We never told Ava about the strings we had to pull, and we never will. I don’t want her to feel like an outcast.

It’s hard to believe she’s eighteen now and going off to college. “Mom, we did it.” She hugs me tightly.

“This was all you,” I remind her. She’s been through more than any kid should go through, but she still managed to keep her grades up. I think school has been a welcomed distraction for her.

We may not know what happened to the guys, but for their sake, I hope they found peace.
