By evening, we still haven’t found anything, and my frustration is getting the best of me. I can usually find any information in a couple of hours, but it’s nearing dinner time, and we still haven’t found anything useful.

We’ve only found the information with his family, his marriage certificate, his law firm, and his school information. I hope Az found something better.

Everything he has on here is too generic, almost as if he’s been preparing for someone to look into him. It’s too generalized, which wouldn’t normally raise any flags, but the only time I met this man, he didn’t give me a good vibe. I thought it was jealousy because he was married to the most amazing person, but I’m now realizing it was more than that.

I smile at the memory of his face twisting in rage and disgust when he saw the mark I left on Kat. He has no idea how special she is—he really fucked up.

A phone call pulls me away from my thoughts. I grab my phone from the table. “Hey, man. I need your help,” Benji’s voice comes through the phone.

“Why didn’t you just use our mind link?” I ask, it’s probably the same reason I forget to use mine. We aren’t used to this anymore.

“First, because I keep forgetting we have it back, and I actually don’t want to keep your focus away from your task.”

“What’s going on?” I sit a little straighter, rubbing my neck. The stress is getting to me.

“There’s two men on the property that are not part of our pack or any of our visitors. I need your help with these guys.”

“Who the fuck are they then?”my wolf shouts in my head.

“They said their leader told them to report back on Ava.” He doesn’t need to say anything more.

“On my way,” I tell him before hanging up.

I yell out to my guys as I’m leaving. “If you find anything, message me. I’m meeting up with Benji.”

“We got you, Tyler,” Carter says.

Who are these guys, and what the fuck do they want with Ava?

Chapter six

Benji

Hunters.

That one word leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Since I was a young boy, it’s been my life’s mission to wipe out every single one of them from this earth. Until today, I thought I had succeeded.

Hunters took everything from me—twice—and the memories of my pack, my family, and my baby sister being ripped away from me and killed have fueled my passion for tracking down those bastards and ripping them to shreds. It was the only reason I agreed to join the council to begin with.

Kat mentioned them when I was lying in the hospital bed on the verge of dying. Ash and Az also told me about the hunters, yet I couldn’t wrap my head around it until now.

There’s no way I can be skeptical while staring at two of them, very alive but closer to death than either of them know.

My guys grabbed them while they were out on patrol. They were trying to hide, but there’s no way to mask their scent. They reek of wolfsbane.

The only thing they admitted to was working with a supernatural. I heard rumors when I was young about shifters turning against their own kind, working with hunters to track and kill. After the first attack on my pack, my family had been accused of such atrocities and disowned by what was left of our people. I never thought I would see the day that one of our kind joined forces with hunters, but now I see the rumors are true.

“I guess there’s a first for everything,”my wolf voices.

“Yeah, I guess so,”I agree.

My thoughts are brought back by the two men in front of me grunting. We’re at one of our isolated cabins bordering the end of our property where the state forest begins. We don’t see humans out this way, so it’s the perfect place to hide bodies.

The man to my right has one eye swollen shut, courtesy of our beta, Andrew. The man on the left isn’t faring much better. He’s got a swollen lip and a broken nose that keeps gushing blood everywhere.

I rest my back against the wall, staring at the two seated men, while Jackson questions them. Andrew is off to the side, his hands clenching, ready to start punching both of them again.

“Who do you work for?” Jackson asks coldly, but he still gets no answer. “What information do you have on Ava?”
