"What kinds?"

I bite my lip. "Wouldn't you like to know? But yeah...I grew up in a small town down in Louisiana, and I always wanted more. That's just the kind of girl I am."

"The insatiable type?"

He's so close to me I could reach out and touch him. AndGod, I want to--he's hot as hell, and charming on top of it all.

"Yeah," I say. "I guess so."

He leans back in his chair, holding the empty beer bottle--and I get it, because I'm doing the same thing purely for the sake of having something to do with my hands.

"You should come to practice on Monday afternoon," he says. "Finn will be out of town, so I'll be coaching. You can get a look at what it's like living in Fern Hollow, and afterward, you can buy me that beer we discussed."

"Practice?"

"Soccer practice at Fern Hollow High," he says. "This is what I do over the summer, remember?"

I raise an eyebrow, considering his offer. "And what makes you think I'll be interested in buying you a beer after practice?"

Johnny grins, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Because you like me, remember?"

My cheeks flush, and I look away. "I never said that."

"No, but you were thinking it," he says. "I could tell."

I roll my eyes. "You're full of yourself."

"Maybe a little," he admits. "But I'm also right."

I shake my head, trying not to laugh. "Fine. I'll come to practice on Monday. But only because I'm curious about this undercover agent story."

"Hey, I wasn't lying," he says, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "I really am working with the FBI."

"Sure you are," I say, standing up from my chair. "But I have to go. I'm sure Jake and Sarah are wondering where I'm at, and Carina's gotta be getting tired."

That's one reason. Ialsodon't want to have to resist this temptation any longer--not when Johnny is so clearly coming onto me.

Johnny stands up, too, then extends his hand. "I look forward to more conversation," he says. "And when the season starts...I'll make sure to get you a good seat right next to the rink."

I take his hand in mine, and we shake hands, his touch sending shivers down my spine. "Thanks, Johnny," I say, giving him a small smile. "I'll see you on Monday."

He nods, and I turn to leave, but before I can take a step, he pulls me back towards him. My pulse is racing when I see the look in his eyes, dark with sultry promise.

"What is it?" I ask him.

He smirks. "I'm guessing it would break the journalistic code of conduct if I kissed you," he says.

I can't help the blush that spreads over my cheeks. "It really would," I tell him.

But I don't step away.

We stand there next to the lake, Johnny's hands wrapped around mine. I'm holding my breath as he takes a step closer, my breath rushing out of me.

Then a firework goes up, startling us both--and I take a big step back.

"I'll see you this week," I tell him. "And...maybe I'll text you."

"Sounds good," he says. "See you Monday, Birdie."
