“I… Something good came from it.”

It blew the lid off years of misplaced hatred. It’s the night I first started seeing Logan for who he is. And not who I thought he was. It’s the first night I started to see who I’ve been all these years.

And who I don’t want to be any longer.

Sterling watches me carefully.

“It won’t be long until sunset. Being on the water for it is spectacular.” His eyes glint. “Stay and have dinner. It will give us time to talk. You can tell me what made you come here.”

I open my mouth to politely decline, then snap it shut. There is no way to turn down Sterling Beaufort. Especially when I’m here to ask for his help. I’m not naïve enough to think I could walk onboard, have a five-minute conversation with him, and then walk away with the answer to everything. He’ll want to know why I’m here. Why I’mreallyhere. And if I have any hope of getting his help, then I will have to be honest.

I’ll have to tell him everything.

I look at his friendly expression and take a cleansing breath. I can pretend this is therapy. Let it all out. If he says no, I’ll never see him again anyway. He’s a billionaire. We don’t move in the same circles. I’m safe to let it out. At least, I think I am.I hope I am.

“That would be lovely,” I say. “But I should warn you. The truth is… messy.”

He chuckles as he holds his glass around the rim between his fingertips, before bringing it to his lips with a knowing smile.

“When isn’t it?”

Chapter 36

Logan

“Howmuchlonger?”

“We’re looking at an ETA of eighteen forty-five,” the pilot replies over his shoulder.

“Fine. Good. Thank you.”

I crack my knuckles as I walk out of the cockpit. The flight attendant gives me a practiced smile as I pass her and take up pacing the cabin again. She answered the same question for me ten minutes ago. I didn’t want to ask her again for the fifth time this flight, so I went straight to the pilots. They probably think I’m losing it. If this were my regular crew, they’d know I was. I sit down and work on flights. I don’t stalk up and down the aisle like a man possessed.

I take a deep breath and let it go slowly, but it does nothing to ease the tension that’s commanded my body since reading that email. I’ve tried Maddy. But I can’t reach her. Then I called Dad in the hope the jet hadn’t been grounded yet, along with other assets. But it had. Spencer came to the rescue by chartering this one for me. I swear he’s a changed fucking man since Gabrielle’s talk with him. I guess it put things into perspective for him. He’s getting what he wants. Just not in the way he originally planned.

I pace more as I look at my watch. I wasted time after reading her article. I sat in my car wasting precious minutes, reading it a second time.

I knew what it was the first fucking time I read it.

A lie.

Another one of her fucking lies.

“Fuck,” I mutter, pushing my hands back through my hair.

Where is she? Drew told me she flew to Rome. I sped across London to her boss’s house. She told me that Maddy asked to work remotely for the foreseeable future.

She isn’t planning on coming back.

“Hurry up, come on.”

I drop into my seat for the first time since we took off and look out of the window. I didn’t even pack a suitcase. Just got on the plane as fast as I could. She’s running. From me. From us. It’s all she’s ever done. But I can’t bring myself to stop chasing her, no matter how hard she’s tried to push me away.

Pushed because shelovesme.

I pick my laptop up and read the article again.

The real one.
