“We have to continue with the same plan as before but do it out here in the woods,” Esme decided. “I’ll take the North, same as before. Girls, you know what to do.”

They certainly did, although now they were more exposed. They concluded that flying up above the trees was their best bet. Ivy to the East, Bliss to the West, Esme to the North, and Willow to the South. Montgomery would continue to walk on the marshmallows, wrapping the silver wire around trees.

When they were all in place, Esme started the chant, soon after joined by her daughters.

“Obligamus vos omnes ad hunc locum sic non excedere donec sol oriatur tertio die et cum exeatis longe ibitis.”

They repeated it over and over until their words connected them at the four points with a surge of blue light. Willow was amazed and overwhelmed. Surely this kind of magic was too great for her. When she began to falter, Esme sent her one of those mom looks but telepathically since she was a ways away. She didn’t know if she could hold up her end. She didn’t want to be the weakest link. But then she glanced down and saw Montgomery fearlessly wrapping wire from tree to tree, and at that moment, she wanted nothing more than to be brave. So, she metaphorically pulled up her big girl panties, and focused on the incantation.

“Obligamus vos omnes ad hunc locum sic non excedere donec sol oriatur tertio die et cum exeatis longe ibitis.”

The thing about a big ‘ol blue square light in the sky, is that it will draw attention to those down below. And if those down below are up to no good, they won’t take kindly to an opposing coven of witches trying to cast a spell on them.

But they didn’t have brooms of their own so they couldn’t very well fly up to stop the spell casting. But they did yell up at them. Most of what they yelled were curses and such, which won’t be repeated here.

Nadine swooshed her arms around maniacally, channeling the purple essence of the Hobby Lobby ball, and flinging it upwards.

“You missed,” hollered Willow, and that just made Nadine madder.

“If you’re doing what I think you’re doing,” cried Nadine. “It will never work. You’re one of us.”

“What?” Willow shouted. “I can’t hear you.”

She could, in fact, hear perfectly fine.

Astrid covered the Hobby Lobby ball with her body as if it had to be protected at all costs. Daria and Rowena joined Nadine in swishing their arms about to fight off the Ravensong women, while Jewels… well Willow wasn’t sure exactly what Jewels was doing other than running in a circle barefoot.

“Hold it, girls,” Esme cried and surged her energy into the blue light until Willow, Bliss, and Ivy could feel it jolt through them.

All the efforts of Nadine and her coven turned out to be completely fruitless, being the ones down below. And even though they combined their forces to try to get at the Ravensong women, they seemed to be just out of reach. Or perhaps the trapping spell was working.

The Twilight coven went berserk, doing everything they could think of, it seemed. But then, Nadine stopped completely and instructed her sisters to do the same. She was looking at something just beyond in the wood, and Willow could hear a menacing laugh down below.

“Montgomery!” He was down there and alone.

Nadine thrust her arms out with a flash of light, sending a chord of purple energy coming from her fingers. And like she was pulling on a rope in a game of tug-of-war, lassoed Montgomery into the clearing where she and the other witches were doing their witchy ritual.

Willow flinched, reacting to the instinct to save Montgomery. But Esme held on to her with the channel of blue energy.

“We almost have them, Willow. Don’t break it.”

“Yes, but at what cost?” Willow cried. “They’ll kill him.”

“He’s already dead. Stay the course.”

But Willow’s heart spoke louder than her reason, and letting go of the trapping spell, swooped downward, hoping the square would form into a triangle just long enough for her to rescue Montgomery from Nadine’s magical purple lasso.

“Well, well, well, how adorable” Nadine said with a cackle. Came down to rescue your boyfriend, have you?”

She tugged tighter on the lasso, squeezing Montgomery’s arms to his sides.

“Let him go,” Willow demanded.

“Pledge your soul to us and I will.”

Willow snorted. “You’re such a cliche, do you know that?”

“You can’t save him. Nothing you do will ever save him.” Then she fixed her eyes on Montgomery and bared her teeth. “Isn’t that right? Montgomery Harland.”
