“Nyana made some... comments about our situation.”

My ears perked up. What situation?

“What did she say?”

“We’re both back on the market.”

The female warrior groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Fuck.”

“Yeah.”

“Well, I’m going to need more to drink.” She stood up. “Come on, let’s go drown our sorrows.” Zerek and Herrath rose as well. “Not you.” She pointed at Herrath, who rolled his eyes.

“A pleasure, as always, Raenisa.”

As the group disbanded, I stayed seated on the couch, watching as Herrath finished his wine, his eyes flickering over to me before he left with a respectful nod to the Marshal.

“You’re not coming north with me,” Zerek laughed as they headed for the door, stretching and rolling his shoulders as they walked out.

Raenisa’s voice drifted back to us. “We’ll see if you’re still saying that after five drinks.”

He chuckled, stopping at the door with Raenisa, who glanced over her shoulder.

“Your concubine didn’t eat, by the way.”

I scowled at her back as she strode into the hall, leaving me alone with the Marshal.

Theron turned to me, his face a mask of frustration. “You didn’t eat?”

“What does it matter?”

“Because you’re mine. And I take care of what belongs to me.”

“I don’t belong to you,” I growled.

He stepped closer, his voice low and dangerous. “Oh, but you do. And I’ll make sure you know it.”

He picked up a piece of the braised pelatar and brought it to my lips without a word. I stared at him for a moment, trying to decide if this was some sort of trick or test, but his face remained stoic.

“Open for me.”

“No.”

He took a small bite of the meat, gesturing grandly to show me it wasn’t poisoned.

“See? It’s safe.” His eyes were heavy-lidded as he studied my mouth, waiting for me to move. He was a patient hunter, but I knew that already. I reluctantly opened my mouth, allowing him to slip the morsel inside.

I hadn’t realized how hungry I was until the savory flavor hit my tongue and my stomach growled in appreciation. My teeth brushed his fingers and a soft groan escaped him.

“Do that again and I’ll bite you,” I warned.

A smile tipped up the corner of his mouth. “Don’t tempt me.”

I snorted, and he continued feeding me pieces of soft bread smothered in honey, sweet berries dusted with sugar, and tart citrus fruits sprinkled with salt until I was content and full.

Theron watched me as he fed me and though he had not yet said it aloud, there was something in his gaze that told me he meant every word of his earlier declaration: that I belonged to him now.

“You’re very stubborn,” he said warmly, brushing a lock of hair behind my ear.
