I stepped closer to him, glimpsing confusion and hurt warring in his gaze. He had just been learning to stand up against his horrible family, but my actions had ruined all of that.

“Sihaya,” he breathed, and a stone dropped into my stomach. I couldn’t hear this.

“Gag him,” I ordered, and he thrashed against the rebels holding him, almost breaking free until they managed to tie him in a harness, forcing a leather strip between his teeth. One of them gripped Theron’s long hair, sawing it off at the shoulders and lifting it above his head as they cheered.

Muffled curses spilled out of him, his eyes blazed with wrath, hatred emanating from him with every heaving breath. Every tender emotion he may have had for me once was gone, replaced with a profound loathing. I tore my gaze away, steeling myself against the shame threatening to overwhelm me. I wasn’t even sure who I was betraying anymore.

Roza approached me with a familiar bone sword and Theron’s eyes locked onto it, his struggles increasing as she smirked at me. “Bet you’ve been missing this.”

She tossed me the sword, and I caught it, spinning it as if it was an extension of my hand. I looked at the carving I’d added to it five years ago, running my finger over the promise that I’d carved into the bone. “Where’s his other one? I want the set.”

Realization dawned on Theron’s face like a lightning strike and rage twisted his features as he thrashed, uncaring of the leather cutting into his skin.

He realized I was Striker.

The gag muffled his shouts of fury, but I understood the curses he lobbed at me. I smiled and pretended that it didn’t hurt, hiding my pain until I could lick my wounds in private.

“We need to move fast. They won’t be far behind.” I commanded, holding Theron’s gaze as his eyes burned into mine, promises of retribution crackling between us. “We have to go into the desert before they can track us.”

“What about him?” Roza said, jerking her chin towards Theron.

I sauntered closer to him, ignoring the effect his body had on me as I gripped his loose hair and tipped his head back, forcing him to stare up into my eyes.

“He’s mine.”
