Herrath snickered. “You think that’s bad? I had a friend who used to sleepwalk. We’d find him in the most bizarre places, once even in the river. He never figured out why he kept waking up drenched.” Mirijana snuggled into his side and he dipped his head, whispering something in her ear that made her blush.

Chuckles surrounded us, the tension of the impending battle temporarily forgotten. The fire crackled as if sharing the mirth with the starlit sky. I looked around the campfire at the group, my chest aching with happiness. It hurt knowing that this could be the last time we’d all be together... and it was only the first. We’d spent so much time being enemies we’d wasted the chances we’d had for more.

“I never thought,” I murmured to Theron, “that they’d get along so well.”

His hand, hardened by war yet gentle, found mine, squeezing it lightly, a silent promise in the firelight. “Don’t worry, love. We’ll get them through this.”

I laid my head on his shoulder. Of course, he knew what I wasn’t saying, could feel it down the bond. “Come on. Let’s go to bed.”

Theron smiled down at me, then stood and tugged me to my feet. “We’re going to bed. Don’t forget to get some sleep tonight.”

Roza snickered. “Like you two will sleep much.”

“Ugh. Gods, Roza. That’s my sister.” Gavril made a face at her and Zerek laughed.

“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure they get some sleep soon,” Herrath promised Theron, looking more relaxed than I had ever seen him.

“Night, Kael,” Mirijana chirped and I gave her a quick hug.

“Thanks, Herrath.” Theron clapped him on the shoulder as we passed, ignoring the teasing catcalls of our friends around the fire as I shot them rude hand gestures. I caught sight of Zora and Tykas slipping away together into the darkness, the large man’s silhouette almost completely obscuring hers.

I stopped when we neared our tent, seeing Raenisa and Caelia sitting outside Raenisa’s tent.

Jerking Theron’s hand, I pulled him to a stop.

“Kael? What—“

“Shhhh.” I cut him off and continued in a whisper. “I want to see what they’re talking about.”

His bronze eyes danced with amusement as he glanced down at me. “Are you eavesdropping on Rae’s love life?”

“Yes, and it’s finally getting good, so be quiet.”

His laugh was low and dark as he eased closer to me, his hand running down my side as he dipped his mouth to my ear, and brushed his lips over the sensitive tip.

“Let’s see if you can keep silent,Sihaya,“ he murmured, his hand sliding into the front of my breeches as he pulled me further into the darkness. I stifled a moan as his finger grazed my clit, his mouth finding my throat as he began to tease my body.

I tried to watch the interaction as Caelia mended a tear in Raenisa’s cloak, her fingers nimbly weaving through the fabric. Raenisa was trying, albeit failing, to maintain a stoic expression, but the softness in her eyes, the subtle curve of her lips, spoke the truth she didn’t utter.

“I could do that myself, you know,” Raenisa put in. “I’m not helpless.”

Caelia shrugged. “I never said you were.”

Unspoken words hung in the air between them. I swallowed a gasp as Theron pulled down my top and his mouth found my breast.

Raenisa didn’t reply, but the softening of her eyes, the unconscious lean of her body towards Caelia, was answer enough for her.

The firelight painted them in a warm, golden hue, casting flickering shadows and making the surrounding air seem to shimmer. They sat in comfortable silence, the only sound the soft swish of the needle through the fabric and the quiet crackle of the fire.

Theron’s clever hand circled my clit slowly, delicately as he teased me, in contrast to his teeth scraping against the tender skin of my breasts. “Have you seen enough,Sihaya?”

My reply was a breathless ‘no’ as the women resumed speaking.

“It’s colder than usual tonight,” Caelia murmured, her eyes never leaving Raenisa’s. It was a simple statement, yet it held a world of concern, a silent ‘Are you warm enough? Are you alright?’

Raenisa’s reply was only a nod, but her gentle look, the subtle reach of her hand to touch Caelia’s, were silent whispers of ‘I am now.’

I let out a soft gasp, and Theron released my nipple from his mouth with a wet pop.
