Her lips were warm and soft, and when my tongue slid against hers, her gasp of pleasure sent a shot of excitement through me. For a moment we stayed tangled together like that, until she finally pushed me back with a playful glint in her eyes.

"Behave, Connor," she said as she returned to cleaning my knuckles. "I'm trying to take care of you here."

I chuckled and watched her carefully wash and apply antiseptic to my wounds. Her touch was gentle, almost tender. It made me feel cared for in a way I hadn't been used to until her, something I couldn't remember ever feeling before.

"Do I want to know how you got these?" she asked.

"Probably not, but I promised I would tell you anyway." I pulled the stopper out of a bottle of bourbon with my teeth, and poured us both tidy glasses, even though I knew Cass wouldn't drink hers until she was done. "Dockmaster named Unger shorted us on a shipment today and tried to lie about it. This was the third time. He won't be doing it again."

Cassidy hummed. "Was he in the possession of all his teeth when you left him?"

"Broken nose and a black eye. Bastard's got a hard head."

"Did he have an eyebrow ring by chance?" she was dapping at a particularly nasty cut.

"Think I caught that one on his tooth."

"Ah."

"Punching people in the face isn't an exact science, love."

"So Tommy keeps telling me."

I downed the rest of my glass. "I talked with Alfie today."

Cassidy looked up. I had told her about my suspicions and fears about Alfie. It was nice, having someone to open up to like that, someone I didn't have to keep my mask up for. I had never had that.

"He was telling the truth. It was a girl."

Cassidy's jaw dropped. "No."

"I honestly wish I was lying. Alfie is dating the adopted daughter of Lorenzo Moretti."

"No fucking way." Her eyes narrowed. "So, I'm judging by the way you didn't lead off that you had killed him that Alfie isn't the mole."

"No." I shrugged. "He says Emilia was raised outside the family, and I believe him. She had the chance to roast his ass multiple times, but she protected him. It seems Alfie is in love."

She giggled, and it was so unlike her I couldn't help but smile. "First you, then Alfie. Now all we need is for Tommy to fall head over heels for someone, and the McTiernan Clan will be well and truly fucked."

"I'm pretty sure Tommy is madly in love with Sloane, God help him."

Cassidy hissed through her teeth. "And I'm pretty sure Sloane only has eyes for Alfie. What a mess."

"And we're still no closer to finding the mole."

"Who most likely killed Johnny," she added.

I clenched my jaw. Cassidy finished up by pressing one last kiss to the top of my hand before stepping away, and all the tension ran out of me like water. "There," she said with a satisfied smile. "All better."

I stood up from the stool where I'd been perched and crossed the kitchen to her side. Clan business could wait. Right now, I had a beautiful woman mentally undressing me with her eyes.

Wrapping my arms around Cassidy's waist, I gave her a gentle squeeze and whispered into her ear, "Let's go to bed."

"Nope, nope, nope. You'renot going to do it. Absolutely not." I stood over the sink in the thankfully vacant women's bathroom, arguing with a stomach that was threatening, yet again, to throw it in reverse. The harsh hospital lighting made me look like a ghoul. God, I hope I wasn't coming down with something. I didn't have time to get sick.
